I finished the reading of "New Yorkers ─ short stories"; in last journal I have already introduced the reason ─ I chose the book is that I think in order to know a city we should know people of it, a rough gist of the series of stories and some pieces of the author's career. So this time I share some reflections of mine and short digests of stories in the following section. Besides, I choose "Alice's adventures in wonderland" as my next reading matter.
"The Christmas Presents" describes a poor couple, even though both of them didn't have enough money to afford a gift, each of them tried hard to get ideal gifts for the other and hoped the other mate would be happy at Christmas. For that, the wife sold her beautiful long hair to buy a gold chain which matched her husband's treasure watch; the husband sold his watch that been handed down from grandpa to gain a pair of combs for his wife's pretty hair. As we see at the above, we always try very hard to give our lovers the best thing, always bear in mind the interest of her/him, and are willing to do many things that may make her/him happy. However sometimes matter not goes as we expect, we will feel frustrated and down, and we will also forget that just two people get together is a thing which is worth being glad, not necessary to build our happiness on material outer things. It's fine to express our love by sending presents, but the most important is that we should cherish the time we own jointly. Like the end of this story, although they couldn't immediately use the gifts from the other, they could sense the affections of them, and they enjoyed the companies with the other and had a good meaningful Christmas with laughs and tears while they knew they love the other much.
"Soapy's choice" and "A Walk in Amnesia" can view this two stories as comparisons; other two "Tildy's Moment" and "The Memento" also can see as contrasts.
"Soapy's choice" says a tramp wanted to pass cold winter in prison where was nice warm and with food and his friends. He made several plans and carried them out to in sure police would catch him and sent him where he wanted to go ─ the prison. After he throw a stone to brake a shop window, ate a meal without paying, stolen an umbrella from a gentleman, and bother a lady at street, etcetera, police were around the scenes when he did those , he still was not arrested and wandered in the streets. Then he walked near a beautiful church and thought of his old happier days; that made him decided to change his life and be a new man. At the same time, a great irony happened that police arrested Soapy and told him he would stay in prison for three months like his prime expectation. "A Walk in Amnesia" tells a lawyer was busy with his career, who had been warned by doctor that it was likely that he would get amnesia. One day on his way to work, he thought about the doctor's words and felt well and pleased with life. Next, he woke up on a train and found he didn't know who and what he was. He made up a name for himself and began a new exciting life in New York. He met several acquaintances and he told them he was not the man they knew and went away. But another day his wife came and found him with the doctor, at first he still denied who he is, after his wife left the room, he asked the doctor, his old friend, to keep what he said as a secret; actually he had been pretending. When I read "A Walk in Amnesia", originally I couldn't figure out what it happened, after I thought twice, then I got it. There were different leading roles in these two stories, but they told the same thing. That is whoever and whatever we are, poor or affluent, a tramp or a lawyer, we always will have questions to our lives feeling confused or tired about them, and would like to change constant daily lives admiring others' lives. I thought this is common, is humanity. We continuously ask ourselves and discover who I am, what we need, what we want. Sometimes we are not unsatisfied with lives we have, maybe we just need to take a relief. We need some time to take a rest, and then we will get over.
"Tildy's Moment" says a waitress, Tildy, worked in a small restaurant, who was small, fat and not beautiful. In the same place, another waitress, Alien, was tall beautiful and full of live. All customers came to the restaurant liked Alien, they laughed and talked with her, and many customers sent her presents, but no one cared about Tildy. One day a man, Mr. Seeders, who often came to have meal, kissed Tildy after he drank too much beer. It is the kiss changing Tildy's world. She understood that men could like her as much as Alien. Her eyes were bright; her face was pink. She wore bright clothes, did different hair style, and looked nicer. Two days passed from that day; Mr. Seeders came again with a very red face, and he told Tildy he was sorry for what he had done, because of drink he didn't know what he did at that time. After listening that, Tildy cried out loudly. "The Memento" tells an actress, Miss Rosalie, was tired of the kind of life which she performed in theater, was surrounded by men who didn't respect her, and paid a little. She left the town to the country. There, she met and decided to marry a man, Arthur, who she considered as Mr. Right. She didn't tell him she was a actress because she wanted to forget and put that life behind herself. Someday she learned Arthur kept a memento ─ something which belonged to a girl he had loved. She asked him about it, after a conversation between them, she loved him more. She considered he was different from other men, resulting of that even he never met and spoke to that girl, but he loved her and wanted nothing from her. However she got very angry, when she found the memento was one of her garters which fell down from stage in one of her performance. These two stories are about women with love. After reading them, I realized some maters. One, we should be love ourselves, or nobody will like us. Two, the happiness is found by ourselves; we can decide what attitude we take and what way we do. Others can't take decisions for us and can't take the place of us to live our life. If we desire to have happiness, we must pursue for it ourselves and when we found that, we have to enjoy and value it. Don't just wait for it, and when we are conscious of that it is not the thing we want; just let it go. With reluctance, without pleasure.
p.s. I am sorry for the delay of submition.

I read the book "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" these weeks. There are seven stories in the book. I've been read two of them. It's written by Edgar Allan Poe and simplified by Roland john and Michael West.
Mr. Shuttleworthy was a wealthy and respectable gentleman. One day, he was missing. His best friend, Mr. Goodfellow, who was popular with everyone leads the search. They thought Mr. Pennifeather was the killer. Mr. Pennifeather was the missing man's only living relation and had bad personality. He had knocked Mr. Goodfellow before but Mr. Goodfellow showed his kindness. Mr. Pennifeather was brought to the prison after the search. A month later, Mr. Goodfellow had a party and received a present. When he opened the present, the poor body of Mr. Shuttleworthy, covered with blood, sprang out in the box and said "You are the man!" Mr. Goodfellow scared and confessed his murder. In fact, this wasn't the supernatural. Another friend of Mr. Shuttleworthy made a secret investigation and found the real killer. He put the body into box and made it spring up. In the end, Mr. Pennifeather was released and his habits changed.
This is my sister's book in her senior high. When I first glanced at the illustrations, I was frightened because they were a little horrible. I thought Mr. Goodfellow couldn't be the killer at the beginning, but I was wrong. We are often deceived by surface because we seldom examine its internal. As we learned in class, we have to think things carefully and use some strategies to analyze them so that we can distinguish whether things are true or not.

Recently,I read a short novel. The short navel was "The Green Door".The story was major to tell us some lessons. Then I introduced the story's content briefly. The leading role was Rudolf. He was a true adventurer and a piano salesman. He liked to try many kinds of adventures. In a day,he walked on a noisy street. And there were many black men who were sending out handbilla. And he received one.On the paper, writing some informations about a new clinic. And he was led into a room.He saw there was a girl o the bed who was sick. And then he bought some foods for her.But when he went out the room,he found the rooms' doors here were all green and into these rooms in which had a sick man.At this time, he just knew he was cheated. Originally, this social was dangerous. This story was just probably describing some processes. And I felt the society in present is really have a lot of things which are what we can't anticipates. This society is no longer we imagine in of ordinary commonness, so when we go out outside, we have to be more careful. |

Summary
Captain Miller and his men encountered German tank's attack in Ramelle. Because someone saved them, everybody didn't get hurt. More fortunately, someone is Ryan that they had to find. After Miller talked to Ryan that they had to bring him home. Ryan said "he doesn't deserve special treatment and he want to stay to continue his mission-keep control of bridge." Miller had no choice but to help him accomplish his task and then took him home. They all know this task was very difficult because they have little weapons to fight German's task. So Miller thought one way that is to make some of them go down the main road between those buildings. We can use the broken bricks and stones to make the passage narrower. Then they can't go through it.
At the end, they succeed but in order to protect Ryan from attack, Miller was shot by German's soldier and then he died.

I have finished this book, "eat, pray, love".
This book talked about pleasure, devotion and balance.
Last theme is balance; Liz is in
He taught Liz how to do mediate, the major is smile. Smile with face, smile with mind.
And you must want to know how old the old man is, frankly speaking, only god knows. He only knows his birthday is a Thursday. The date is not important to him.
And she falls in love with Felipe, a considerate man.
That is a lovely ending, I think.
Travel along takes much, and always gets much.
I think Liz found what she wants, and she get rid of the troublesome things.
She has a new life now. That's pretty good.

In the course of the past two weeks, I had been nearly reluctant to put down"The Black Pearl"every time I read because the content is so absorbing as though it can lead me into the story plot.
In the city of La Paz,Baja California Sur, every one heard of the Monta Diablo, including Ramon Salazar— the main character. Ramon's father who is the most famous dealer in pearls and also a good pearler promised him that Ramon can sail with him and be taught how to dive by him when he is sixteen. When the date come, his father begin to teach him how to examine pearls (shapes, weight, luster…) but not dive. Finally Ramon sail with his father while only stay on the boat, doing some sundry duties. Among his father' s employees, the best diver is Gaspar Ruiz ("The Sevillano")— a braggart who likes to tease Ramon.
On the one hand, Ramon's dream is to find"the great Pearl of Heaven"— it is said to be protected by the Monta Diablo (the monster devilfish) ; on the other, The Sevillano's tease enrages Ramon so he decide to learn diving and find it. When his father is away on business, Soto Luzon, an Indian who sell pearls to his father come and as before sell the black pearl to Ramon. Ramon give him higher price for the purpose that he ask Soto to take him to a secluded lagoon and teach him diving.
Soto allow Ramon to his living place, and start teaching him about diving (breathing→holding a sink stone→treading quietly on the sand→prying the shell…) On the fourth day, Ramon go out the lagoon alone. It is on that day he finds"the great Pearl of Heaven"How does he get? And after he gets that rare black pearl, what is happened to him? Although I have not seen it yet, I am so expected about the following plot and wonder to know that.
The past two weeks, I read it about 20-30 minutes every time on average. I think that reading the English book for me is more easier than at beginning I read, even find some interesting when reading it. Moreover I am glad to feel that on the one side, and on the other side I am excited to reach that position. (but there are still many to achieve)

There were three whores lived in the apartment above the Breedloves' storefront. Pecola very loved them, and always visited them. They, in turn, did not despise her. But because they were whores, they would teach Pecola some wrong concepts and affect her life in the future.
Maureen Peal is a new girl in the school, and she was a mulatto. She was so beautiful and earned everybody's attention. Maureen was nice to Pecola because she thought Pecola can make her represent her largess. She used Pecola to set off her beauty. She disguised to talk with Pecola kindly, but actually thought Pecola was just a black and ugly girl. Frieda and Claudia noticed this fact, they were very angry and quarreled with Maureen on the street. Maureen screamed said that she was cute and they were ugly; even use the word of black so many times.
Through the story, I saw the friendship among Pecola, Frieda and Claudia. Although they were black girls, the friendship among them was bigger than the fake kindness of a mulatto girl. I think the important thing to a person is not what kind of race he is, but what consciousness he keeps in mind.

This time, I chose the book "A Christmas Carol" for me. It is written by
Charles Dickens in 1843, illustrated by Ian Miller and published by OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY. Its level is stage 3(1000 headwords), and there are 57 pages in the book.
The reason why I chose this book is that I read the guide of it and it had me want to know more about it. I have finished 25 pages.
The story is said that the leading character, Scrooge is a hard, clever but mean man.
The only thing that matters him is business, and making money. Everyone will not say hello or give a smile to him. When his nephew visited him on Christmas Eve, he was not happy but saw Christmas as humbug.
I think Scrooge is really a lonely man. I think he is so capitalist that he always feels money is important in his life. Therefore, he armed himself with coldness and forgets to pursue more meaningful and nice things in his life.

Is ant different between justice and revenge? Bruce's father and mother were killed by a beggar. Should he forgive him? Could he kill that person by himself if the judge set him free? The character 3 is talked about the transition of Bruce. The murderer, Chill, was captured before long he committed the murder. Many years later, Chill served a sentence and would grant bail. That news was the last thing Bruce want to learn. He extremely hoped that the Chill was sentenced capital punishment. However, The judge set him free. In my opinion, the law in Gotham is corruptible. A murderer such as chill should be executed absolutely. However, it is inevitable to have crime in Gotham, because the poor accounted for large percentage of citizen. Only a few people are rich. It is difficult to make decision who to blame. If all of people were affluent , who wants to kill person for money? |

In this story, I learned the way of dealing with problems. Instead of keeping our hate in mind, we should let past passed way. No matter what happened, families were still families.
And the next book I chosen is ''The Orange Outlaw ''. This book was written by Ron Roy, he is an amazing author of the A to Z mysteries series. His book let people enjoy reading. This story was about three kids' adventure of catching the painting thief. They only had some clues about orange peels and an orange hair. So how could the kids catch the crafty crook?

Hamlet is the leading man,and he is a prince. He discovered that his uncle murdered his father, but now his mother married his uncle.
A terrible things happened to him.should he kill his uncle?Could his mother afford her second husband's death? He can't decide what to do?
When he tried to decide,he brought death to many other people around him.
By the end of play,I felt very unfortunate for him.
Finally,Hamlet revenged himself on his father's murderer, his uncle, but he had been dead for denouement.
After reading this tragedy ,I agree with Hamlet avenged his father ,but I think the better way is that he didn't hurt his family members.
Maybe he can take moderate plan to carry out.Even then,I usually admire Shakespeare that he can write so absorbing story.
Now,I find I can more concentrate on reading than before, and I must maintain this good habit forever.

Title: Anne of Green Gables
Author: L.M. Montgomery
The re-write author: Anne Collins
Publishing company: PENGUIN READERS
Year of publishing: 2002
Number of pages: 40
Vocabulary level: Level 2
Anne is an orphan. She was adopted by Marilla and Matthew. In the beginning, they wanted to adopt a boy, not a girl. But, they don't wanted Anne to go and live with a woman who wasn't very kind to her. So, they decided to live in the Green Gables together. Although Anne made some mistakes, she was still brave to face them and solve them. She was very kind to everyone. At first, she was very hate a boy, Gilbert, because he was rude about her hair. But, she finally forgave him and they became good friends.
I think that everyone should be very kind to other people. Just being like Anne. Because the people in the society always keep other people at a distance, the people will become much stranger over a long period of time. If we use love to deal with everyone, the society will fill with love. And, everybody will become happy. And, we have to brave to face our mistakes. Don't be afraid of facing them. Then, we are going to deal with the mistakes which we made. That's a right attitude to face mistakes, not only avoid them.

The story is talked about at WW2,Captain John Miller and his men received the mission from government that they had to look for Ryan and brought him home because all his brothers died in the war.
After reading this story I have some opinions. Is it worth to rescue Ryan at risk of all teams lives? I think it is not worth because they all have familys. If they die at the mission, their parents also are very sad. In addition,at the war,as citizen you must have determination of sacrifice for the country. So if Ryan die unfortunately we will be proud of him not sad for him.

Following is its synopsis.
Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and a role that she has never questioned… until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister ,and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable… a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves. My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life… even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less?
I think the author vividly evokes the physical and psychic toll, and it's a complex subject with bravado, everybody should not miss it!

The impression which was deep for Sarah was once Walter used dandelions made a beautiful hat to Sarah. But afterwards Sarah came back the restaurant in the original country. So they lost contact for some days.Sarah very missed Walter.A day she typed the new menu.In the new menu, there were many dishes about dandelions which made Sarah thought to Walter.Original, all of everythings were designed by Walter.Finaly, they married smoothly. For me,I had no special feelings to the story. On next time,I would choose an interest story. However,I hope I can really absorb these new wards. |

Methods for Effective Learning
A. To grasp main ideas of a discourse
1. Read/watch/listen attentively. TAKE NOTES.
2. Use the 6W1H (or, the reporter) approach for re-organize:
a. Who did
b. what,
c. when, where,
d. why,
e. how and
f. to what effect (results and implications). or
3. Use pentad: (actually can be understood from the reporter approach)
a. Act: What happened? What is the action? What ideas are involved? To what results and implications?
b. Scene: Where is the act happening? What is the background situation? (including when)
c. Agent: Who is involved in the act? What are their roles?
d. Agency: How do the agents act? By what means do they act?
e. Purpose: Why do the agents act? What do they want?
B. What should you write in your reading journal (a kind of informal book report)?
1. Basic information about the book, if it is a new book for that particular journal entry.
Title, author, the re-write author, publishing company, year of publishing, number of pages, vocabulary level (if marked)
2. What you read during the period of the journal entry?
Number of pages you read and a summary of the story (or part of the story). Here, what you do is paraphrasing. In principle, you should use your own words. If you find someone else’s writing suits your needs (of explaining) very well, you can quote them. But you must give credit. Otherwise, you are committing plagiarism.
3. Your thoughts on what you read. Again, here, you should use your own words. If you feel a need to borrow someone’s writing, give credit.
4. Your thoughts on your reading effectiveness
As this exercise is to cultivate and to enhance your reading ability, a reflection on how you do it with what effectiveness will be helpful. Are you having fun? Being moved? Inspired? Frustrated? Bored? Are you choosing the right book? Are you using your time well? Are you doing this totally just by yourself or doing it with some friendly support will be better?
