I had kept reading last week, I read a new book this time.

I chose the " ROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS".

The book was written by Jules Verne,retold by Michael Dean, and publish by PENGUIN READERS.

The leading role in the book was Phileas Fogg, who was a cold men.

Phileas Fogg has a servant, named Jean. Phileas Fogg and his servant had a wager with their Reform Club members, they tried to finish the journey round the world in eighty days.

They started their journey from London, and through Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Yokehama, San Francisco, New York and come back to London.

They had a lot of troubles in their journey. They helped a princess in India , caught by indians in America, and was sent to jail in England.

Finally , they still finished their journey on time, and gained a lot of money.

This is an excitable story I never seen in the past. Phileas Fogg met some difficult things. However he solved all troubles on time. The process was so exciting.

I have finished all reading journal in this semester, I wish I can read more English book in future.

Through the magic wardrobe, the four characters entered the kingdom of Narnia, where animals could speak, trees could sing, and human beings fought against the evil. Being a friend of the main characters', I see how Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy make significant decisions in their adventure, and also how they become kings and queens in the realm. What's more, I also became acquainted with the kindest, the wisest, and the friendliest lion in the world, Aslan, who is the personification of love, sacrifice, and love!

In my opinion, Narnia Kingdom is really full of fantasy and surprises. And many imaginational creatures really exist over there!
Moreover, the characters in this story are all very emotional. The resurrection of Lion King, Aslan, and the final peace of Narnia symbolizes that -- justice will always win! When watching this film, I felt as if I was there, and adventured with the characters in the Narnia!

During these two weeks, I finished an English book called "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." It is written by Mark Twain, retold by F. H. Cornish and published by Heinemann ELT. This is at beginner level with 63 pages. It is a story that talks about a naughty boy, Tom, the main character of this story. He is smart but always makes troubles and makes his aunt, Polly, angry. But he also knows how to make her laugh. His friends and he have played pirates for a week in an island. It sounds crazy. The unexpectedly thing is that one night Hunk and Tom go to a graveyard, they see a murder! At last, Tom offers his testimony, then, he becomes a hero. Tom loves a girl called Becky, he uses his pictures to makes her fall in love with him. Once, he and she get lost in the cave. They use a candle to find out the exit. In the cave, they meet Joe who is the murderer that Tom has seen in the graveyard. Finally, Joe suffers and dies in the cave. Huck and Tom are popular at last. Mark Twain's real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. When he was twelve, his father died, and he went to work for a printer. He began writing humorous stories when he was seventeen. At first, because the English book title, I didn't notice that this is a famous story. The reason I chose the book is because the writer. I have read Mark Twain's humorous story when I was in senior high school. This is an interesting story. Many unusual things happened in the story. Never will you know what will happen. And the author is good at describing the characteristics of the people in the story. Although this is the last RJ, I wish I could keep the habit of reading English book. Look back to this semester, it is indeed substantial!

Forrest Gump

This novel is very popular around the world.
It was adapted for movie in 1994, and won lots of prizes.

It is a story about how a stupid child becomes outstanding.
Although Forrest is stupid, he do lots of things that normal people cannot do, such as footballer.
He was an footballer when he was a student, and he played wonderful games again and again.
When he was a soldier, he was almost dead in the war.
Because of the war and his brave, he could meet the President in the white house and won the medal.

He fell in love with his classmate, jenny, and they had a son.
However, they didn't get marry finally, and Forrest did not know he had a son.
When he and Jenny re-encountered, Jenny told him they had a son.
But, they could not marry with each other because Jenny was other's wife.

There are some classic sentences:
1. Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.
2.Now you wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I could run like the wind blows. From that day on, if I was ever going somewhere, I was unning!
3.I am stupid,but I know what love is.
4.There's only so much fortune a man really needs, and the rest is just for showing off.
5.You got to put the past behind before you can move on.

The third book I chose is called "Narnia- The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe". I haven't finished it, but I have almost read 40% of it. The reason I chose this book was because it was not too difficult for me to read and I also thought this story was interesting. Even though I had seen this movie on TV, I still wanted to read this book, which was written by C. S. LEWIS.

This story has four main characters. Because of the world war, they had to move to a professor's suburban house. But one day, the youngest sister, Lucy, found that the wardrobe could enter another world- the kingdom of Narnia. And this explorative story which was full of love, friendship, trust and sacrifice had also begun….

I continue my reading "Good Wives" this week. I start my reading from chapter 6.

Jo had gone to New York for her new life after Laurie proposed to her. After Laurie refused by Jo, he had gone to France. He met Amy in Paris. Amy cared about Laurie and crushed on him, and then they fall in love to each other.

Jo went back to home to take care of Beth , who was ill and would die soon.

After Beth died , Jo was very sad. However Professor Bhaer comforted her; they met each other when Jo lived in New York. At last, Jo married to Professor Bhaer although he was twenty years older than her.

In my opinion, I see a lot of love between Marches. After reading, I think families are the most beautiful things in the world.I learn one word. If "play" be noun, it means script. I also learn one proverb, " Five clothes make a man ". Meg and Amy wanted five clothes in the story. Five clothes means property, money and the rich life.

During these two weeks, I have finished reading an English book called "the Black Tulip" and a story of "Silver Blaze and Other Stories."

"the Black Tulip" is written by Alexandre Dumas, retold by Florence Bell. It is at beginner level with 63 pages. This book is published by Heinemann ELT.

This story began from a competition of growing a black tulip. Cornelius Van Baerle was clever and rich. He loved tulips more than other flowers. Because some untruth reason ,he was sent to prison. Isaac Boxtel was a mean guy. He tried to steal bulbs of black tulips from Cornelius Van Baerle. According to some tips Prince William judged Cornelius Van Baerle was the winner of growing black tulips. Finally Cornelius Van Baerle won the prize of 100,000 guilders.

I am interested in this story which not only a competition but also love story. And the content is attracting, I was eager to know what will happen when I read this story. In a word, I like this book. So I finished reading this book efficiently.

"Silver Blaze and Other Stories." is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, retold by Anne Collins. It is at elementary level with 56 pages, and it is published by Heinemann. This book comprises three stories. So far I finished the first part.

The main character of the book is Sherlock Holmes who is a detective. He is so clever that he solve a criminal case step by step. The first story talks about a man stole a Blue Carbuncle, and hid it in a goose. Sherlock Holmes used some clues, finding out the thief gradually.

I like detective stories. And I look forward to the following stories..

"Round the World in Eighty Days" By Jules Verne

This novel is about a man with his friends go round the world in eighty days.
In 1872, there were no airplanes, there were only trains and ships.
Phileas Fogg had a bet with his club friends, if he would not finish his journey in 80 days, he would pay 20000 pounds for them.
So, he started his journey with his servant, Passepartout.

In their journey, there were lots of things happened to them.
One detective, Fix, had a mistake on Phileas. He thought he was a thief, so he followed Phileas and tried to stopped his journey.
Phileas and Passepartout saved a woman, Aouda, in India, and she followed them back to England.

Finally, Phileas was back to England in 80 days, he won 20000 pounds and married with Aouda.

This novel makes me realize that if I want to success one thing, then I should try my best to finish it. No matter what problems I meet, I must to face them and solve them. Never give it up easily!

Although Maggie and Father Ralph had realized how much they loved each other, they still could not be together. And all this would happen was just because Father Ralph was a priest！However, Maggie could do anything but being married to another man, Luke. And in fact, it was really a bad choice for Maggie to marry this guy. Because after they married, Luke did not treat Maggie as his wife and did not care a fig for this family either. And what's worse, she just could not forget Father Ralph！

As time goes by, Maggie and Father Ralph could not crucify the affection deeply in their mind. So they decided to have a baby even though it would break the religious principles. Maggie saw their son, Dane, as the booty which she disputed for Father Ralph with the church. But she could not believe that when Dane grew up, he should decide to work in church！And actually, this story ended with a tragedy. Dane had a heart attack and died of salvage. After their son's death, Maggie and Father Ralph had realized the consequence that they betrayed god！

During these two weeks, I finished one book named "The Signalman and The Ghost at the Trial." It was written by Charles Dickens, retold by F.M Cornish. This book is at beginner level, about 600 basic words in it. The book includes two short stories. One is The Signalman, another is The Ghost at the Trial. The similarity in these two stories is that there are mans who can see the ghost. Both of them are mystery stories.

"The Signalman" is talked about a signalman who sometimes saw a strange man. The man sometimes puts his hands in front of his face. And sometimes he holds his left arm in front of his face and waves his right arm. Everytime after seeing the strange man will there be accidents. That is, some people died after the signalman saw the strange man. And the signal was died in the end. No one is sure whether the man is a man or a ghost.

"The Ghost at the Trial" is about a murder. A man was accused of murder his friend. One day Mr. George became one of the jury. It is strange that Mr. George can see the victim's ghost. The ghost appeared in different time and place. Only Mr. George can see the ghost. It seemed that the ghost wanted Mr. George to help him. And finally, Mr. George persuaded all the jury. And the murderer was killed.

Honestly, I am disappointed about the book. I like mystery story, but I think this one is boring. This is about my forth book written by Charles Dickens. And this is the last book that I want to review. But this book's writing style is different from his book I read before.

These days I found out that whether a book is attracting is important to improve me to study. In fact, I read "White Fang" before "The Signalman and The Ghost at the Trial." But after reading three pages I found I wasn't interested in it. So, I gave up reading "White Fang". And I turned to read this book. I wish next time I can borrow some interesting books.

My Reading Journal 5 B組 卓咨廷

I read a new book this week. The book is called "Good Wives".

It was written by Louisa M. Alcott, and retold by Anne Collins.

Louisa M. Alcott was a famous writer, she wrote the famous novel "Little women".

The "Good Wives" was the sequel of the "Little women".

It described a lot of details of the "Little women".

The March sisters-Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy have grown up.

They have become young women.

Then, each sister has a different plan for future life.

I didn't finish read this book. I have read four chapters.

Meg has married to John Brooke, she began her married life.

Although John was poor, Meg learned the lessons with him.

John taught Meg about content and love.

Jo was the second daughter in family.

She was always bad-tempered, and everybody she was bored and rule.

However Jo was good in writing, she wanted to be a writer.

Laurie was the Marches' neighbor and he was Jo's special friend.

Because he proposed to Jo. But Jo refused him.

After the proposal, Jo traveled to New York starting her new exiting life.

I will continue to read this book. I interest in the four sisters' future!

This week, I want to introduce "Jane Eyre".
I have not read the chinese one before, so I was very excited about it.
I guested there would be a happy ending, but I was wrong.

Jane Eyre can be seen as the reflection of the writer, Charlotte Bronte.
Both of them are clever but not pretty.
Jane is a governess, and Charlotte is, too.

Jane had a unhappy chidhood, when she got 18, she went to Thornfield Hall to be a governess.
And soon, she got crazy about the owner of the house, Mr. Rochester.
Moreover, Mr. Rochester also loved Jane.

However, when they decided to marry with each other, someone told Jane that Mr. Rochester had had a wife, but she was mad.
So, Jane decided to leave.

After her leaving, she found her cousins.
And her uncle left his own money for Jane.
However, Jane did not forgot Mr. Rochester.
She gave her money to her cousins and went back to Thornfield Hall.

Thornfield Hall was burnt.
And Mr. Rochester became blind, but he still loved Jane.
Finally, Jane decided to marry him.


I think it was not a happy ending.
Because there were no prince and princess' s happy life.
But I believe that true love win all bad things.


These days, I did not read English novels very often because the weeks of mid-term exams.
But I remember that Mrs. Tsao say that no matter how busy you are, take some time to read everyday, it will be a nice habbit!
I hope I can do it really!

Reading Journal 4 溫宏鈞

A year without made in China ? To me , it is difficult. You can imagine that all the things around us almost made in China or be made up of material which come from China. The goods come from China with low price because of its' low cost of labor .if I din't buy these goods means that I should buy something from the other country.Maybe the quality will be good, but your money will loss. And why we boycott the China's goods? I don't think boycott is a right behavior. You can choose what you like but don't easily boycott somethibg. There are many people live in China need the wages to support their own family. Maybe the quality of goods is bad,but they have a low price . Good quality or low price is your own decision!

During this two week I just read one English book called "A Christmas Carol."

It is written by Charles Dickens, retold by F. H. Cornish. And this book is at elementary level .There are about 1,100 basic words in it. The main story is about a mean old man called Scrooge, who at last became a kind person.

Scrooge worked with Marley in the same office as a businessman. Marley died several years ago. Scrooge didn't think about anybody, even his partner. He hated Christmas and said Christmas was humbug. What he care was his money. Not until Marley's ghost appeared did he turn over a new leaf. To save Scrooge from traveling endlessly through the world after his death, he asked three ghosts to meet Scrooge that night.

The first ghost was Christmas Past. It showed Scrooge his past. Scrooge wasn't so mean when he was young, he had warm Christmas with his friends. The unhealthy interest in money made him change gradually. After Scrooge in the present saw this, he cried.

The second ghost was Christmas Present. It was very kind. It showed Scrooge the poor but cheerful Christmas and his nephew's Christmas. The poor were very happy and they drank to Scrooge's health, though Scrooge wasn't so kind to them. Scrooge was moved.

The last of the ghosts was Christmas Yet. It was mysterious. It showed Scrooge's death. Nobody cared about it. In another family a little boy died. The family members cried, and they would remember him forever.

After the night, Scrooge became kind to others. A mean and stingy person finally turned into a generous and kind man.

In this story, Scrooge only paid attention to his money. He didn't care about others, even his nephew. No matter Marley's ghost and the three ghosts is true or just a dream, Scrooge indeed learned a lesson from it. And I hope I will also keep the story in mind. I am not sure whether when I earn lots of money one day will I turn into a person like stingy Scrooge. But I wish I will never forget this: "Money can't buy you everything, especially happiness."

I finished the "WHITE FANG" this week, I read from pages 28 to pages 39.

White Fang sold by his master, Gray Beaver. Beauty Smith bought him.

However beauty Smith called White Fang "The Killer Wolf" and showed

him to people for money. When White Fang slept, people woke him with stick,

they wanted to see an angry wolf. White Fang was very angry;

he hated beauty Smith very much. One day, White Fang was hurt by other dogs,

and then beauty Smith sold White Fang to Matt.

Matt took White Fang to his home. In this way, White Fang's old life ended,

and his new life began. Slowly, he learned new lessons and forgot old ones.

White Fang liked Matt very much. White Fang has changed from a vicious

wolf to a faithful dog.

In my opinion, Matt helped White Fang learn what is life and love.

My forth novel is "A Christmas Carol", written by Charles Dickens.

It is about an old, rich but stinge man's story. His name is Scrooge.

Before Christmas, he was never concerned about anyone around him, he never felt happy.

However, a ghost, called Marley, helped him find his real heart.

There were three ghosts, including Marley, showed his past, now and future.

He knew that how kind was he, and how stinge now. Furthemore, how poor will he possible be.

After this journey, he began a new new new life, he stared to help others, gave anyone a big smile and always felt happy.


I think I should try hard to help anyone I can help.

Don't be stinge to anyone.

Helping others not only can make them happy also can make ourselves happier.


By this reading journey, I read many novels, and all of these are very classic.

I had never read Charles Dickens' novels.

But this semester I read two. I think behind his every story is an apologue.

I hope this summer vacation I can read more, no matter in English or Chinese.

The second book I chose is called "The Thorn Birds". It was written by an Australian author, Colleen McCullough.

This book began with a legend. In Australia, there is a kind of birds. From the time it is born, it searches for a thorn tree. And when it finds one, it flies at the highest, sharpest thorn. As it dies, it sings its last song – more beautiful than any other birds' . The thorn bird is the symbol of the heroine, Maggie Cleary. She is also searching for a way to sing her song.

This story happened in a private barony. The rich woman, Maggie's aunt, who had a great passion on Father Ralph. Although she gave her dower to help him promoting in the church, Father Ralph still didn't love her. It was because he had already deeply been in love with Maggie. And when Maggie grew up, she also realized the Father Ralph's love…

I haven't finished this book yet. But I found it was harder than my first book. Because there were many vocabularies and in some part I had to recite it once and once until I could understand!

Last Wednesday, I finished my first book, Matilda. Although this book was not difficult for me to read, it still took me the whole month to finish it. Because this book is really full of pages!

In the last part of this book, the little girl, Matilda, found that she had a special power. And she found this because once she was angry at her father. She suddenly realized that she could control things surround her with her mind! While trying to put up with her parents' and principal's cruelty, she decided to give them a lesson. She used this power to destroy the television and make a reptile fly on her principal. And with enough practice, Matilda started to learn to control her special power well. Finally, by using her power, she successfully drove the principal away from school.

However, this story ends with a happy ending. Because Matilda's father was captured by policemen, he had to move away to another city. But Matilda did not want to go with him. So, he finally decided to let Matilda live with her teacher, Miss Honey.

In my opinion, I think Miss Honey is the only person who can bring happiness to Matilda. So, I think it is really a better decision for her.
