This week I choose the book "Saving private ryan" to read. It is adapted from the novel by Max Allan Collins and based on the screenplay by Robert Rodat. There are 101 pages(15 chapters) in this book.
Although I saw this movie before, I didn't know what the director want to tell us because I was only 8 at that time. So I decide to read this book to know this story again.
The story is talked about at WW2,Captain John Miller and his men received the mission from government that they had to look for Ryan and brought him home because all his brothers died in the war.
After reading this story I have some opinions.Is it worth to rescue Ryan at risk of all teams lives? I think it is not worth because they all have familys.If they die at the mission, their parents also are very sad. In addition,at the war,as citizen you must have determination of sacrifice for the country.So if Ryan die unfortunately we will be proud of him not sad for him.

My Reading Journal 5 Group I 陳怡婷

I finished the latter half of "Charlotte's Web" these weeks. Under Charlotte's efforts, Wilbur not only lives, but also goes to the county fair with Charlotte. He wins the prize in the end. After the county fair, Charlotte lays eggs which are bigger than her body and then she dies. Wilbur brings it back to Zuckerman's farm. When spring comes, a lot of little spiders crawl out from the eggs. Most of them leave but three of them still remain to be friends with Wilbur.

If the little pig didn't met Charlotte, he would be very miserable. Besides, if Fern didn't help Wilbur, he would be a watering cuisine. Charlotte helps Wilbur to escape the death and Wilbur helps Charlotte to care for her children. The selfless help can change our life. We often argue with our friends. However, a pig and a spider can have such a deep relationship and why we can't. After finishing the book, I understand that friendship isn't relevant to the race or all the external form. I'll try hard to help my friends when they're in a trouble just like what Charlotte did. I'll try to open my heart to all kinds of friends just like what Wilbur did.

Recently,I choose a book which is called My Sister's Keeper.
Because I have read chinese version before,so it well be more easy for me to read english version .
Following is its synopsis.

Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life… even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less?

I think the author vividly evokes the physical and psychic toll,and it's a complex subject with bravado,everybody should not miss it!

Recently,I read a story which calld "Springtime 'a la Carte".But after I finished it,I found the story was a little borning.But I learned some new vocabularies at least,so I still had some harvests.Connecting down, I still introduced the story content. Sarah was a typist about menu in Schulenberg's Home Restaurant.On the previous summer Sarah had gone into another country and loved a farmer's son who named Walter.When they fall in love,Walter always gave many surprises to Sarah. The impression which was deep for Sarah was once Walter used dandelions made a beautiful hat to Sarah.But afterwards Sarah came back the restaurant in the original country.So they lost contact for some days.Sarah very missed Walter.A day she typed the new menu.In the new menu,there were many dishes about dandelions which made Sarah thought to Walter.Original,all of everythings were designed by Walter.Finaly,they married smoothly. For me,I had no special feelings to the story.On next time,I would choose an interest story.However,I hope I can really absorb these new wards.

These week I decided to change other book to read which is called Washington Square.

The writer of this book is Henry James and retold by Jane Rollason.

And this book is at elementary level .There are about 600 basic words in it.

The main story is about a woman whose name is Catherine.Catherine lives in a quiet life with her father and ant in a nice house in a quiet corner of New York.Catherine's father,Dr. Sloper,is a famous doctor.Catherine's father dosen't like her though she is the only one child he has.Because she is not beautiful or clever or interesting,her father sometimes mad her ordinary.And after Dr. Sloper dies,Catherine will have a lot of money.One day she meets a handsome young man called Morris Townsend. He is very interested in Catherine.He soon says he oved her and so does she.However,her father dosen't like him because he thought Townsend is interested in his money not his daughter.Therefore,he tells Catherine that if she insists to marry Townsend,she will get nothing from him.Out of her surprise,Townsend doesn's wants her without money so he leaves her.Catherine feels very sad and broken.

Twenty years later,Morris Townsend comes back and asks her to be together again,but she refuses.

Henry James is one of th e most important writers in the English language.He was born in New York in 1843 and went to school there.He went to Harvard University as a law student.In 1875 he left America and lived in Paris.There he meet other important writers.In 1876 he moved to London.London society loved Henry James and he often out every night of the week.He wrote plays,short stories,and twenty books.Washington Square wrote in 1880 is one of the earliest books.

In the building , there's a new equipment ─ a security camera. It can track what everyone's doing.Andrea don't like this new equipment , she thought that she is always monitored even having a lunch.
One day , Andrea had a little dispute on different views. That noon , Emily didn't have lunch with her , she went out with other colleagues and left Andrea alone in the office. Andrea thought she just went downstairs and had lunch in the restaurant for a while. Two hours passed, Andrea still didn't see Emily come back with her lunch. There's no body in the secretary office, Andrea has to stand by all time to catch Miranda's call.
But it's already four o'clock!!! Andrea was so hungry, she put down the job she was doing and rushed downstairs to have a meal . When she was choosing foods happily, Emily came back! She was so angry and asked Andrea why ske didn't stay in the office. Andrea didn't know that Emily would go out for lunch some time.Both of them were so scared to hear Miranda's message. After playing the voice mail box ,there's no Miranda's message.But..there's a Miranda's nanny's message , she said that Miranda wanted her to inform them because she can't find her both assistants! Did Miranda get angry? No! Her nanny said that she had given the things Miranda wanted. "Don't worry, I just solve the problem. Have a good weekend!" The woman is a savior for them!

After Oliver was caught to the stronghold of thieves for several weeks , not knowing where Oliver is , making Mr. Brownlow feels so sad that lead him to put a notice which inform someone will get reward if the information about Oliver was given , this could be a chance to free Oliver from the hell . Unfortunately , "The Savior" doesn't appear , instead , "The Demon" comes , whose name is Mr. Bumble , his "honest description" about who Oliver is , what background he has , and , most important , what he has done before , shatter Mr. Brownlow's confidence toward Oliver . More worse , a man named Monks who was recently known by the old thief Fagin , says that he will pay a lot if someone who can train a child to be a thief or criminal and lead he to be banished from the country , what a horrible thinking. Not to mention again , the best choice is the major role of this book , Oliver , once again , he was sent to help thieving , and was taken to where the Bill Sikes is by Nancy , Nancy seems to be the only one who is friendly to Oliver , but this time , she won't do anything because life threat by others , the situation of Oliver is more and more harder , could he escapes from this disaster , we'll see .

I have finished the novel ,called "Romeo and Juliet".I have ever seen the movie before ,so it's easy for me to get the point.

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most famous masterpieces. It is a tragedy of love. The book talks about that Romeo loved Juliet at the first sight, and Juliet loves Romeo, too. Even they were in love, they still can't be together because the two families were enemies. Their parents thought that they were not been well matched .In the end of the story both Romeo and Juliet were dead for love. After the two families heared the news, they were touched and decided to make friends again.

It is really happy for us to live in this free society. We can choose our lovers by ourselves instead of by our parents. After all , love can not be controlled.

This time I have finished the book"Oliver Twist"
Then,Mr. Brownlow, with whom the Maylies have reunited Oliver, confronts Monks and wrings the truth about Oliver's parentage from him. It is revealed that Monks is Oliver's half brother! Their father, Mr. Leeford, was unhappily married to a wealthy woman and had an affair with Oliver's mother, Agnes Fleming. Monks has been pursuing Oliver all along in the hopes of ensuring that his half-brother is deprived of his share of the family inheritance. Mr. Brownlow forces Monks to sign over Oliver's share to Oliver. Moreover, it is discovered that Rose is Agnes's younger sister, hence Oliver's aunt. Fagin is hung for his crimes. Finally, Mr. Brownlow adopts Oliver, and they and the Maylies retire to a blissful existence in the countryside.
The book is a little more than others before.However,everytime I read Charles Dicken's book I found it is so true that may really happened in the past.The book also tell us don't give up and go ahead.Be honest!

The book I read still is "The Egypt Game."
I have introduced it for many weeks and I feel a little tired about typing the RJ with the same story.
For this reason, I think that my reading journal may have a little boring.


The story was ended in two boys who inrushed to the Egypt game at the last time.
Now, I will tell you what happened next.
The members in the Egypt game was angry for boys' intrusion.
Most of all, boys might divulge the secret.
Finally, one of the members named Elizabeth had a way to solve it.
She asked two boys to keep the secret and admitted them to join the Egypt game.
I think that is the best approach to solve this problem.
Also, two guys accepted it.


On the other hand,April received her mother's letter.
Her mother still couldn't take her home, so she had to live with her grandmother unceasingly.
April missed her mother very much,and she couldn't help bursting into tears.
I hope that April can live with her mother again not for long.

I have read 60 pages for the two weeks.Mr.Bennet had a good friend , Mr. Lucas.Mr. Lucas had a daughter named Charlotte who was a intimate friend of Jane and Elizabeth.They talked a lot about Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy.

When they paid attention on Mr. Bingley ,they did not find Mr. Darcy started to like Elizabeth.But Elizabeth already had prejudice with Darcy.

One day Jane was invited to Binley's home for dinner.Mrs. Bennet thought it would rained,so she asked Jane to ride the horse, not to take the carriage . Mrs. Bennet did not want her daughter to come back at the night after the dinner.If it rained,then Jane couldn't go back .So Mrs. Bennet asked Jane to ride the horse.While it really rained as Mrs. Bennet hope, Jane got sick.Mrs. Bennet should be sad,but she didn't.She was very happy because that Jane was sick would make Jane stay at Binley's home for more days until Jane recoverd .Elizabeth was very worried about her sister, so she wlked to Binley's home to take care of Jane while it was all this dirt after the rain.And Elizabeth stayed at Bingley's home ,too.

After the midterm test, there was an important game for the accounting. All the accountings from every school in Taiwan would join the game.It included many kinds of sports,such as basketball,softball,table tennis,volleyball . I played tabe tennis .Because the game was coming, we had to practice much more. But I was glad that I could still read the book regularly.

In this week, I didn't read any chapter because I was making the research of the concrete industry and preparing the accounting badminton competition. Therefore, I will introduce the song "Think of Me " which the movie director used to show the reason why can Christine became the new margarita and to replace the chapter 2 "The New Margarita." Although Maggie and Father Ralph had realized how much they loved each other, they still could not be together. And all this would happen was just because Father Ralph was a priest！However, Maggie could do anything but being married to another man, Luke. And in fact, it was really a bad choice for Maggie to marry this guy. Because after they married, Luke did not treat Maggie as his wife and did not care a fig for this family either. And what's worse, she just could not forget Father Ralph！

As time goes by, Maggie and Father Ralph could not crucify the affection deeply in their mind. So they decided to have a baby even though it would break the religious principles. Maggie saw their son, Dane, as the booty which she disputed for Father Ralph with the church. But she could not believe that when Dane grew up, he should decide to work in church！And actually, this story ended with a tragedy. Dane had a heart attack and died of salvage. After their son's death, Maggie and Father Ralph had realized the consequence that they betrayed god！

The novel belongs to a series named "Oxford Bookworms Library".

This simplified edition was published on 2000.

What make a city different from another city? Is it the building, the weather, the people? It is the people who make a city, and if you want to know a city, you must know its people. You must know what make them laugh and cry, know the small detail of their everyday lives. This book contains five O. Henry's famous short stories which is sensitive, funny and sympathetic, and give us vivid pictures of the everyday lives of these New Yorkers. The five stories separately are "The Christmas Presents", "Soapy's Choice", "A Walk in Amnesia", "Tildy's Moment" and "The Memento". These shows that a housewife, a tramp, a lawyer, a waitress, an actress ─ ordinary people living ordinary lives in New York at the beginning of twenty century. The city has changed greatly since that time. Cities grow bigger with the years, new buildings are put up and old buildings are pulled down, horses are replaced by cars and buses, fashions change. But people do not change a lot; people are much the same. The New Yorkers in these stories are very different from each other. Some are rich, some are poor, some are happy, some are sad, some have found love, some are looking for love. But the hopes of a tramp are as important as the hope of a lawyer; the love of a waitress is as exciting as the love of an actress. And we see that people's hopes and fears and dreams do not change with the years.

O. Henry which is the author's pen-name, and his real name is William Sydney Porter. Porter was born in North Carolina, USA, in 1862. When he was twenty, he went to Texas where he worked in different offices and then in a bank. In 1887 he married a young woman called Athol Estes. He and Athol were very happy together, and he at the same time he began writing short stories. His most famous story is "The Gift of the Magi" (in this book called "The Christmas Presents"), and many people think that Della in this story is based on his wife Athol. In 1896 Porter ran away to Honduras because people said he stole money from the bank when he was working there in 1984. A year later he came back to Taxes to see Athol, who was dying, and in 1898 he was sent to prison. During this time there he published many short stories, using the name "O. Henry", and when he left prison in 1901, he was already a famous writer. He then lived in New York until his death in 1910. Porter's stories are both sad and funny, and show a great understanding of the everyday lives of people like shop girls and office workers. He wrote about six hundred stories and made a lot of money, but he was a very unhappy man. When he died, he had only twenty-three cents in his pocket, and his last words were: "Turn up the lights; I don't want to go home in the dark."

I just finished first story and I am going to reading the second story. I think the story is close to our people's daily lives, and there are some happy things and some sad things in story, just like we would meet in our lives. Next time after I finish the book, I will share you my feeling about the stories. And I will keep going with my reading.

This time I saw a brilliant judgement in the court.Charles Darnay was accused of treason and there had many evidence to show that he had traveled between France and England regularly.It was seemed that he would certainly sentenced to death.But things doesn't go on that way.Darnay's lawyer ,Mr. Stryver,made an total twist .The one who sat beside him had the same apperance as Darnay.Mr.Stryver showed that the judge made false evidences to let Darnay be gulity.It was a surprised truth but it indicates the period that the law and government was not an institute that can work its function and was distrustable.

Another important part is the aristocracy's power.Marquis is mentioned in this story.He is an classical aristocracy.He only cared about himself and viewd other people as rats and dogs.He thought whip was the only way to treat them.He didn't care the death of them.His value was totally distorted.It not his fault.It was the abolition and the time made him this kind of person.He was just a tragic of the time.

I think the most difficult part for me to read is I can't recognise their names easily,so I have to turn to front pages to find who he is.

My Reading Journal 5 H組，Pythia

During these two weeks, I have only finished one book named " Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ." It was written by Robert Louis Stevenson, on the other hand, retold by Stephen Colbourn. This book is level of basic elementary school and there are approximately 1,110 words in it .The reason I choose it is that I can thy to read not only literary books but also other different books In addition to book, it was adapted to movie in 2003.

The main story is talking about a kind and smart doctor, named Dr. Jekyll. He indulges in scientific and medical research and always spends his time

studying it in his laboratory. The story started with that, Dr. Jekyll created a kind of chemical compound, which made him turn into another person, who is ugly and evil, named Mr. Hyde. Little by little, Dr. Jekyll lost his original personality and gave in to Mr. Hyde. He became evil and broke the law and committed crimes. In the end, he was imprisoned.

The book was certainly worth reading and I recommended my friends to enjoy it. By the way ,one of the reason I interested in this book was that my friend ,Kelly, recommended such a interesting book! I thought I was "obliged" to pass this pleasure on to others!

These two week I have read about the situation of Pecola's family. They lived in a very shabby house. They lived because they were poor and black, and they stayed there because they believe they were ugly. One day, Cholly, Pecola's father, had come home drunk. And Mrs. Breedlove, Pecola's mother, asked him to take some coal for her. But Cholly didn't want to do it. Then they started to fight each other. Pecola's brother, Sammy, even screamed, "Kill him! Kill him!" Pecola was so afraid that she started to pray. Pecola thought if her eyes were different, her teeth were good, and her nose was not big and flat, she would be beautiful. Maybe Cholly would be different, and Mrs. Breedlove too. Each night, she prayed for blue eyes.

When I read this book, I deeply feel sad with the little girl, Pecola. Everything was not her fault, but she had to accept all of the harm. Racial discrimination exist in this society for a long time, and also made a lot of problem until now.

My Reading Journal 5 H組 韓佳恩

I was so glad that I had finished "James and the Giant Peach" last week! The intriguing adventure finally ends, leaving a lasting impression in my mind.

To come back to the previous plot, they encounter catastrophe－ lots of sharks eating the peach and James's idea－Miss Spider and Silkworm spin silk and tighten it to the seagulls, made Earthworm as bait works! They gather hundreds of seagulls and thus fly into the air. They also meet air-elemental creatures called Cloud Men, who are responsible for painting rainbows during their travel. In the end, James and his partners arrive New York City, with a funny landing－the giant peach spiked upon the pinnacle of the Empire State Building. It's really an amazing sight, and everyone go wild with excitement. Finally, James comes out, straightening out this fantastic view. Then James and his friends have wonderful lives in America.

And I have begun to read a new book "The Black Pearl", written by Scott O'Dell. He was one of America's most respected writers for young people, and his books received many awards, including the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins and the Newbery Honor for The Black Pearl and Sing Down the Moon!

Although the midterm examination did not end yet last week, I still kept reading in my leisure time. I read it and found the plot of the new book as exciting as the previous one. At beginning, it is said that there is the Manta Diablo, the monster devilfish under the sea in the town of La Paz, Baja California Sur. No more than two people have really seen it, and of the two, only one is alive— Ramon Salazar, the main character. Story starts! The Black Pearl centres on the alleged fortune of finding a very large and valuable pearl.

This two weeks, I read 20—30 minutes, almost every day on average. And I hope my efficiency can be better as well as reading speed, with more attention on it!

During these two weeks, I finished one book named "The Signalman and The Ghost at the Trial." It was written by Charles Dickens, retold by F.M Cornish. This book is at beginner level, about 600 basic words in it. The book includes two short stories. One is The Signalman, another is The Ghost at the Trial. The similarity in these two stories is that there are mans who can see the ghost. Both of them are mystery stories.

"The Signalman" is talked about a signalman who sometimes saw a strange man. The man sometimes puts his hands in front of his face. And sometimes he holds his left arm in front of his face and waves his right arm. Everytime after seeing the strange man will there be accidents. That is, some people died after the signalman saw the strange man. And the signal was died in the end. No one is sure whether the man is a man or a ghost.

"The Ghost at the Trial" is about a murder. A man was accused of murder his friend. One day Mr. George became one of the jury. It is strange that Mr. George can see the victim's ghost. The ghost appeared in different time and place. Only Mr. George can see the ghost. It seemed that the ghost wanted Mr. George to help him. And finally, Mr. George persuaded all the jury. And the murderer was killed.

Honestly, I am disappointed about the book. I like mystery story, but I think this one is boring. This is about my forth book written by Charles Dickens. And this is the last book that I want to review. But this book's writing style is different from his book I read before.

These days I found out that whether a book is attracting is important to improve me to study. In fact, I read "White Fang" before "The Signalman and The Ghost at the Trial." But after reading three pages I found I wasn't interested in it. So, I gave up reading "White Fang". And I turned to read this book. I wish next time I can borrow some interesting books.

I read a new book this week. The book is called "Good Wives".

It was written by Louisa M. Alcott, and retold by Anne Collins.

Louisa M. Alcott was a famous writer, she wrote the famous novel "Little women".

The "Good Wives" was the sequel of the "Little women".

It described a lot of details of the "Little women".

The March sisters-Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy have grown up.

They have become young women.

Then, each sister has a different plan for future life.

I didn't finish read this book. I have read four chapters.

Meg has married to John Brooke, she began her married life.

Although John was poor, Meg learned the lessons with him.

John taught Meg about content and love.

Jo was the second daughter in family.

She was always bad-tempered, and everybody she was bored and rule.

However Jo was good in writing, she wanted to be a writer.

Laurie was the Marches' neighbor and he was Jo's special friend.

Because he proposed to Jo. But Jo refused him.

After the proposal, Jo traveled to New York starting her new exiting life.

I will continue to read this book. I interest in the four sisters' future!
