Mr. Edward Rochester finally falls in love with Jane, and they decide to get married. On the wedding, a stranger says that Mr. Rochester doesn't divorce his own wife, and she is still alive. After Jane knows the truth, she decides to leave Mr. Rochester, and goes to look after Mrs. Sarah Reed who fells sick of a serious illness. Mr. Rochester has been looking for Jane all the time. There is a fire accident in Thornfield, and Mr. Rochester unfortunately becomes disabled and losing his sight. When he is so miserable, Jane comes back and swears to look after him all her life.

This time I finally finished "Jane Eyre". It is a so famous novel which I learn very much from. I know that if I want to have love, I should give my love. When I face difficulties, I should find a way to solve it, instead of crying and being sad.

Then Jane Eyre is send to Lowood Institution, which accepts girls who don't have parents. At Lowood, the food is simple, and the teachers are crude. Jane makes a good friend, Helen Burns. Jane admires and loves the gentle Helen and they become best friends. However, Helen dies for the typhus epidemic.

After eight years, Jane She advertises for a governess and is hired by Mrs. Alice Fairfax, the housekeeper of the Gothic manor of Thornfield. She starts to teach a little French girl named Adele Varens. Jane's employer, Mr. Edward Rochester, is a moody, charismatic gentleman, and Adele is his illegitimate daughter. Adele gets along with Jane very well. Jane likes Mr. Rochester gradually.

I find Jane always faces the difficulty firmly. In the difficulty, she may be sad, but she encourages herself, and handles problem bravely. After she grows up, and accumulates enough knowledge, she plans her future actively. I think I have to follow the spirit, and pursue the goal of my life, instead of recoiling.

My Reading Journal 5 E組 林盈潔

The book I read in the two weeks is "Jane Eyre". It is one of the most famous of British novels, and I have read chapter fiveThe novel was an immediate critical and popular success after be published. This novel tells the story of a child's maturation and focuses on the emotions and experiences that lead to her maturity.

The novel begins in Gateshead Hall, where Jane Eyre, a ten-year-old orphan, is living with her uncle's family, Mr.Reed who was mother's brother. Mr.Reed dies shortly after adopting Jane. His wife, Mrs. Sarah Reed, and their three children (John, Eliza and Georgiana) don`t like Jane Eyre. They neglect and abuse Jane, because they resent Mr. Reed has a preference for Jane Eyre, the little orphan. In addition, they dislike Jane's plain looks and quiet yet passionate character.

The novel begins with young John Reed bullying Jane, who retaliates with unwonted violence. Jane is blamed for the fight, and then the servants in the family drag her off and lock her up in the unused red-room, where Mr. Reed had died. Still locked in that night, Jane sees a light and panics, thinking that her uncle's ghost has come. She was so scared that her scream rouses the house, but Mrs. Reed just locks up Jane for longer. Then Jane has a fit and passes out. The next day, a doctor, Mr. Lloyd, comes to Gateshead Hall and suggests that Jane go to school.

Then Mrs. Reed asks for Mr. Brocklehurst who is a cold, cruel, self-righteous, and highly hypocritical clergyman. He runs a charity school called Lowood. He accepts Jane as a pupil in his school. Jane is infuriated, when Mrs. Reed tells him, falsely, that Jane is a liar. After Brocklehurst departs, Jane bluntly tells Mrs. Reed how she hates the Reed family. Mrs. Reed so shocks that Jane`s scarcely responding, and then leaves the drawing room in haste.

After read the beginning, I look forward to the following plot which will develop. I would like to know that how Jane Eyre to faced the big change in her life.

The third book I choose is "Jane Eyre". The author`s name was given as "Currer Bell", and it was only later known to have been written by Miss Charlotte Bronte, one of the five daughters of a clergyman I Yorkshire.

Charlotte Bronte had an intense and lively imagination, and in Jane Eyre she has projected much of her own character and experience. Like Jane she was little and plain, and like Jane she went to a charity school and later became a private governess.

Her sisters Emily an Anne shared Charlotte`s imaginative powers and writing ability, and many were the stories and dramas they invented in their childhood days. These developed later into various prose and poetical publication, of which Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte has been one of the most widely read since it was published more than a hundred years ago.

I would like to enjoy a romance that is full of character and interest.

I continue reading this book "David Copperfield" in theses two weeks. I have finished it. To continue the story, David Copperfield go to visit his aunt , and she has him in her care. She offers him to study the law with Mr. Spenlow. When he was 21 years old, he starts to write books. Day after day, he becomes self-restraint and be a gentleman. He fall in love with a pretty girl, Dora, who is Mr. Spenlow`s daughter. David wants to marry her. At first Mr. Spenlow objects to it, but in accident he died. David must look after Dora, so they get married. Dora can`t manage the house well, and she doesn`t understand the books David wrote. But they love each other very much, they have not been overthrown by these difficulties.

For David , his friends are important, too. He has a lot of true friends, such as Traddles, Mr.Micawber, and Agnes. Traddles is a poor man, but he is a nice man. He studies hard and becomes a great lawer. Mr.Micawber is a good man, but he always can`t manage his money well. He meet a bad man, Uriah Heep. Uriah utilizes Mr.Micawber to do the bad thing. Mr.Micawber exposed Uriah bravely. Agnes is a nice lady, who grow with David. She loves David very much. Dora, David`s wife, have a miscarriage of a fetus, and becomes ill. Before long, She passed away. David was very sad, and Agnes always looks after him. Finally, they fall in love with each other, and get married.

From the story, I learn that be humble is very important. David, the protagonist of this story, is always humble, and be nice with who he loves. David also work hard, and never give up. I think he is worth imitating. I learn a lot from this book！

The second book I choose this time is "David Copperfield". There are 96 pages in this book. The level of the book was 1200 words, which is higher than last book I chose. The author of this book is Charles Dickens, who is one of the most popular writers of all time. He began writing "David Copperfield" in 1849, and the book was retold by Nigel Grimshaw. Dickens had his first success as a writer with "The Pickwick Papers". By the age of twenty-four he was already famous, and he stayed famous until he died. He wrote different kinds of books, fiction and nonfiction, such as "Oliver twist", "Nicholas Nickleby" and "Christmas Carol".

The story is about David Copperfield. When he was born, his father had died. His mother and he were interdependent, but they had a loyal servant, Peggotty.The years went past and David Copperfield reached the age of six. His happy life suddenly changes when his mother married again. Her new husband, Mr.Murdstone, was cruel to him and sent him away to school at Salem House. The headmaster of that school was very evil, but he had a good friend, Mr. Steerfourth. After later, her mother passed away too. His stepfather hated David, and sent him to work in London.

I have not finished it yet, but I have already finished reading chapter seven. This book is very fascinating, so let me can't help reading. David Copperfield`s life was hard, but he didn`t give up. The spirit is worth studying. I can not wait to see the ending.

The book I choose is" The Prisoner OF Zenda", which was published in 1894.The level of the book was 600 words, I have spent one week finishing reading this book. I want to start with easy level that I don't be too nervous for reading English books. The author of this book is Anthony Hope, whose most famous stories are：" The Man of Mark, The Prisoner OF Zenda and Rupert of Hentzau. The Prisoner OF Zenda was adapted for the film many times. There are page 63 in this book, and retold by Stephen Colbourn in 1998.

 

    The book is about Rudolf Rassendy, who was a rich young Englishman. He is going to see the coronation of Prince Rudolf Elphberg. But the prince has been kidnapped . Mr. Rassendy looks like the prince, so he was asked for disguising as the prince. He helped  rescue prince and kill the bad man, Black Michael.

   

    The book is easy and interesting. It lets me be confident of reading the English books, I hope I could continue reading the English book, and enjoy it！
