Exercise in Paraphrasing

1. Definition of “paraphrasing” revisited. “para-“ “phrase-“

* You must get the most important ideas.
* Please don’t include your opinions or lessons learned in paraphrasing.

2. Be concrete and specific. Instead of saying “his old theory” and “new theory”, tell what the theories are. Key actors are also important. Write out the names. Don’t just say “he” or “his friend”.

3. Accurate description of time sequence and causal relationship are also crucial for a faithful paraphrasing.

1. At first, Samenow thought criminals were victims of early traumatic experience or family instability, but after studying, he realized that criminal choose to commit crimes, not by his environment. He accepted the study and published “Inside the Criminal Mind.” He dared to change his mind.

2. Stanton Samnow is a clinical psychologist working with criminals. He believed that criminals were victims of early traumatic experiences. His treatment based on it didn’t work. Then he joined Yochelson’s work and found he was wrong. He discovered the problem of crime is the way they think.

B.

1. Samnow thought criminals were affected by environment, but finally realized criminals choose to commit crimes. He dared to change his mind.

2. Stanton Samenow first thinks the crime is caused by criminal’s environment, but later when find the true reason is criminal’s thinking, not the environment, he dared to change his mind.
