Reading journal 1

The book I choose is eat, pray, love

Copyright © Elizabeth Gilbert, 2006

There are 445 pages in this book.

This book includes three sections, Italy, India, and Indonesia.

Each of them also includes 36 tales. (So there are 108 tales in this book.)

Why?

In India, the traditional "japa mala" (念誦謦) is strung with 108 beads, and the number 108 is held to be most auspicious, a perfect three-digit multiple of three, its components adding up to nine, which is three threes.

All in all, the reason why does she divide her story into 108 tales is that she wants to structure it like a japa mala.

There are 36 tales in each section, which appeals to her on a personal level because she is writing all this during her thirty-sixth year.

(Excerpts from Introduction)

This is a book about Liz's travel after her divorce in her mid-thirties.

To begin with, the first section is the pursuit of pleasure.

I have read 24 tales already; however, I cannot get the whole imagine from this book.

I think I got maybe 70 to 80 percents.

She went to the language school in Italy and in the beginning she felt everything is good and beautiful.

Although she felt good, she still couldn't let Depression and Loneliness go.

She wrote and talked to herself, she recognized herself as a friend.

Finally, she is free from them.
