My Reading Journal 6 Team L 林孟萱

I finished the reading of "New Yorkers short stories"; in last journal I have already introduced the reason I chose the book is that I think in order to know a city we should know people of it, a rough gist of the series of stories and some pieces of the author's career. So this time I share some reflections of mine and short digests of stories in the following section. Besides, I choose "Alice's adventures in wonderland" as my next reading matter.

"The Christmas Presents" describes a poor couple, even though both of them didn't have enough money to afford a gift, each of them tried hard to get ideal gifts for the other and hoped the other mate would be happy at Christmas. For that, the wife sold her beautiful long hair to buy a gold chain which matched her husband's treasure watch; the husband sold his watch that been handed down from grandpa to gain a pair of combs for his wife's pretty hair. As we see at the above, we always try very hard to give our lovers the best thing, always bear in mind the interest of her/him, and are willing to do many things that may make her/him happy. However sometimes matter not goes as we expect, we will feel frustrated and down, and we will also forget that just two people get together is a thing which is worth being glad, not necessary to build our happiness on material outer things. It's fine to express our love by sending presents, but the most important is that we should cherish the time we own jointly. Like the end of this story, although they couldn't immediately use the gifts from the other, they could sense the affections of them, and they enjoyed the companies with the other and had a good meaningful Christmas with laughs and tears while they knew they love the other much.

"Soapy's choice" and "A Walk in Amnesia" can view this two stories as comparisons; other two "Tildy's Moment" and "The Memento" also can see as contrasts.

"Soapy's choice" says a tramp wanted to pass cold winter in prison where was nice warm and with food and his friends. He made several plans and carried them out to in sure police would catch him and sent him where he wanted to go the prison. After he throw a stone to brake a shop window, ate a meal without paying, stolen an umbrella from a gentleman, and bother a lady at street, etcetera, police were around the scenes when he did those , he still was not arrested and wandered in the streets. Then he walked near a beautiful church and thought of his old happier days; that made him decided to change his life and be a new man. At the same time, a great irony happened that police arrested Soapy and told him he would stay in prison for three months like his prime expectation. "A Walk in Amnesia" tells a lawyer was busy with his career, who had been warned by doctor that it was likely that he would get amnesia. One day on his way to work, he thought about the doctor's words and felt well and pleased with life. Next, he woke up on a train and found he didn't know who and what he was. He made up a name for himself and began a new exciting life in New York. He met several acquaintances and he told them he was not the man they knew and went away. But another day his wife came and found him with the doctor, at first he still denied who he is, after his wife left the room, he asked the doctor, his old friend, to keep what he said as a secret; actually he had been pretending. When I read "A Walk in Amnesia", originally I couldn't figure out what it happened, after I thought twice, then I got it. There were different leading roles in these two stories, but they told the same thing. That is whoever and whatever we are, poor or affluent, a tramp or a lawyer, we always will have questions to our lives feeling confused or tired about them, and would like to change constant daily lives admiring others' lives. I thought this is common, is humanity. We continuously ask ourselves and discover who I am, what we need, what we want. Sometimes we are not unsatisfied with lives we have, maybe we just need to take a relief. We need some time to take a rest, and then we will get over.

"Tildy's Moment" says a waitress, Tildy, worked in a small restaurant, who was small, fat and not beautiful. In the same place, another waitress, Alien, was tall beautiful and full of live. All customers came to the restaurant liked Alien, they laughed and talked with her, and many customers sent her presents, but no one cared about Tildy. One day a man, Mr. Seeders, who often came to have meal, kissed Tildy after he drank too much beer. It is the kiss changing Tildy's world. She understood that men could like her as much as Alien. Her eyes were bright; her face was pink. She wore bright clothes, did different hair style, and looked nicer. Two days passed from that day; Mr. Seeders came again with a very red face, and he told Tildy he was sorry for what he had done, because of drink he didn't know what he did at that time. After listening that, Tildy cried out loudly. "The Memento" tells an actress, Miss Rosalie, was tired of the kind of life which she performed in theater, was surrounded by men who didn't respect her, and paid a little. She left the town to the country. There, she met and decided to marry a man, Arthur, who she considered as Mr. Right. She didn't tell him she was a actress because she wanted to forget and put that life behind herself. Someday she learned Arthur kept a memento something which belonged to a girl he had loved. She asked him about it, after a conversation between them, she loved him more. She considered he was different from other men, resulting of that even he never met and spoke to that girl, but he loved her and wanted nothing from her. However she got very angry, when she found the memento was one of her garters which fell down from stage in one of her performance. These two stories are about women with love. After reading them, I realized some maters. One, we should be love ourselves, or nobody will like us. Two, the happiness is found by ourselves; we can decide what attitude we take and what way we do. Others can't take decisions for us and can't take the place of us to live our life. If we desire to have happiness, we must pursue for it ourselves and when we found that, we have to enjoy and value it. Don't just wait for it, and when we are conscious of that it is not the thing we want; just let it go. With reluctance, without pleasure.

p.s. I am sorry for the delay of submition.

This time , Oliver's life is completely change again as before , from Hell to Heaven , before being "salivated" , he was being commanded to help thieving , but Oliver didn't want to follow their order which made him being shot , bleed , left by those thieves , and finally saved by those who once a target of thieving . Through this , we find that Oliver is a brave child , he doesn't bend to those thieves even under a death threat , and it leads a path to make himself free once again . But we still can't neglect one determinant – destiny . Who can guarantee that Oliver will be treat well instead of being torture or what else ? I think no , even Sociology always tries to tell us that your life is full of choices , and you have the freedom to chose what you like , it sounds good , but history already witness that no one can behave base on free will without outward limitation , like culture , ecnomic etc . Oliver was the best proof , sometimes we really can't deny that something could only answer by God , you know what I mean .

I read the book "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" these weeks. There are seven stories in the book. I've been read two of them. It's written by Edgar Allan Poe and simplified by Roland john and Michael West.

Mr. Shuttleworthy was a wealthy and respectable gentleman. One day, he was missing. His best friend, Mr. Goodfellow, who was popular with everyone leads the search. They thought Mr. Pennifeather was the killer. Mr. Pennifeather was the missing man's only living relation and had bad personality. He had knocked Mr. Goodfellow before but Mr. Goodfellow showed his kindness. Mr. Pennifeather was brought to the prison after the search. A month later, Mr. Goodfellow had a party and received a present. When he opened the present, the poor body of Mr. Shuttleworthy, covered with blood, sprang out in the box and said "You are the man!" Mr. Goodfellow scared and confessed his murder. In fact, this wasn't the supernatural. Another friend of Mr. Shuttleworthy made a secret investigation and found the real killer. He put the body into box and made it spring up. In the end, Mr. Pennifeather was released and his habits changed.

This is my sister's book in her senior high. When I first glanced at the illustrations, I was frightened because they were a little horrible. I thought Mr. Goodfellow couldn't be the killer at the beginning, but I was wrong. We are often deceived by surface because we seldom examine its internal. As we learned in class, we have to think things carefully and use some strategies to analyze them so that we can distinguish whether things are true or not.

I had finished the book which was named Three Great Plays of Shakespeare. This book was retold by Karen Holmes and contained about 60 pages. It was published by PENGUIN READERS and the level was about 1700 words. The writter,Shakespeare who was one of the most important playwrights in the world. There were three stories such as Romeo and Juliet,Macbeth and King Lear in it.There were correspondence in these stories---the main characters die.
The play I most impressed was Romeo and Juliet and it might I had read the book in Chinese before. In the play,Romeo and Juliet were lovers, however, their families hated each other.Because of animosity, the story did not end happily. In the end of the story,Romeo and Juliet still could not escape from the war between their families.
After reading the play,I felt sorry for the love between Romeo and Juliet. They loved each other but they could not live together.Hates had more power than love in the play.

Recently,I read a short novel. The short navel was "The Green Door".The story was major to tell us some lessons. Then I introduced the story's content briefly.

The leading role was Rudolf. He was a true adventurer and a piano salesman. He liked to try many kinds of adventures. In a day,he walked on a noisy street. And there were many black men who were sending out handbilla. And he received one.On the paper, writing some informations about a new clinic. And he was led into a room.He saw there was a girl o the bed who was sick. And then he bought some foods for her.But when he went out the room,he found the rooms' doors here were all green and into these rooms in which had a sick man.At this time, he just knew he was cheated. Originally, this social was dangerous. This story was just probably describing some processes.

And I felt the society in present is really have a lot of things which are what we can't anticipates. This society is no longer we imagine in of ordinary commonness, so when we go out outside, we have to be more careful.

So Miller thought one way that is to make some of them go down the main road between those buildings. We can use the broken bricks and stones to make the passage narrower. Then they can't go through it.

At the end, they succeed but in order to protect Ryan from attack, Miller was shot by German's soldier and then he died.

I finished "A Year Down Yonder" yesterday.
Somehow I felt the story is kind of similar to a Japanese book "佐賀的超級阿嬤." These two stories both narrate how a grandmother kept body and soul together during the hard time with an extra child. Of course, these two grandmas are still very different. Grandma Dowdel of this story is a very strong and tough woman. She knows a lot of things and pays lots of efforts to make their life better.
After living one year with her grandmother, the main character, Mary Alice, has changed, too. Comparison to the first time she got here, now she knew everyone who lived along the street. She knew this town as she'd never know Chicago. She also knew her grandma better. And she would like to live with Grandma Dowdel continually despite of the fact that she couldn't.
In the end, in the last year of World War II, Mary Alice was going to be married. She chose to marry in grandma's house. Although her parents and her brother couldn't come because of the war, she was still not lonely. Grandma Dowdel was beside her and handed her to the groom.
I think it is a lovely story. Maybe it's not a very thrilling one, it means a lot.

I have finished this book, "eat, pray, love".

This book talked about pleasure, devotion and balance.

Last theme is balance; Liz is in Bali and with the old man, Ketut Liyer.

He taught Liz how to do mediate, the major is smile. Smile with face, smile with mind.

And you must want to know how old the old man is, frankly speaking, only god knows. He only knows his birthday is a Thursday. The date is not important to him.

And she falls in love with Felipe, a considerate man.

That is a lovely ending, I think.

Travel along takes much, and always gets much.

I think Liz found what she wants, and she get rid of the troublesome things.

She has a new life now. That's pretty good.

Nest book I want to read is The Wind in the Willows.

In the course of the past two weeks, I had been nearly reluctant to put down"The Black Pearl"every time I read because the content is so absorbing as though it can lead me into the story plot.

In the city of La Paz,Baja California Sur, every one heard of the Monta Diablo, including Ramon Salazar the main character. Ramon's father who is the most famous dealer in pearls and also a good pearler promised him that Ramon can sail with him and be taught how to dive by him when he is sixteen. When the date come, his father begin to teach him how to examine pearls (shapes, weight, luster…) but not dive. Finally Ramon sail with his father while only stay on the boat, doing some sundry duties. Among his father' s employees, the best diver is Gaspar Ruiz ("The Sevillano")a braggart who likes to tease Ramon.

On the one hand, Ramon's dream is to find"the great Pearl of Heaven"— it is said to be protected by the Monta Diablo (the monster devilfish) ; on the other, The Sevillano's tease enrages Ramon so he decide to learn diving and find it. When his father is away on business, Soto Luzon, an Indian who sell pearls to his father come and as before sell the black pearl to Ramon. Ramon give him higher price for the purpose that he ask Soto to take him to a secluded lagoon and teach him diving.

Soto allow Ramon to his living place, and start teaching him about diving (breathingholding a sink stonetreading quietly on the sandprying the shell…) On the fourth day, Ramon go out the lagoon alone. It is on that day he finds"the great Pearl of Heaven"How does he get And after he gets that rare black pearl, what is happened to himAlthough I have not seen it yet, I am so expected about the following plot and wonder to know that.

The past two weeks, I read it about 20-30 minutes every time on average. I think that reading the English book for me is more easier than at beginning I read, even find some interesting when reading it. Moreover I am glad to feel that on the one side, and on the other side I am excited to reach that position. (but there are still many to achieve)

There were three whores lived in the apartment above the Breedloves' storefront. Pecola very loved them, and always visited them. They, in turn, did not despise her. But because they were whores, they would teach Pecola some wrong concepts and affect her life in the future.

Maureen Peal is a new girl in the school, and she was a mulatto. She was so beautiful and earned everybody's attention. Maureen was nice to Pecola because she thought Pecola can make her represent her largess. She used Pecola to set off her beauty. She disguised to talk with Pecola kindly, but actually thought Pecola was just a black and ugly girl. Frieda and Claudia noticed this fact, they were very angry and quarreled with Maureen on the street. Maureen screamed said that she was cute and they were ugly; even use the word of black so many times.

Through the story, I saw the friendship among Pecola, Frieda and Claudia. Although they were black girls, the friendship among them was bigger than the fake kindness of a mulatto girl. I think the important thing to a person is not what kind of race he is, but what consciousness he keeps in mind.

The third book I chose is called "Narnia- The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe". I haven't finished it, but I have almost read 40% of it. The reason I chose this book was because it was not too difficult for me to read and I also thought this story was interesting. Even though I had seen this movie on TV, I still wanted to read this book, which was written by C. S. LEWIS.
This story has four main characters. Because of the world war, they had to move to a professor's suburban house. But one day, the youngest sister, Lucy, found that the wardrobe could enter another world- the kingdom of Narnia. And this explorative story which was full of love, friendship, trust and sacrifice had also begun….

I continue my reading "Good Wives" this week. I start my reading from chapter 6.

Jo had gone to New York for her new life after Laurie proposed to her. After Laurie refused by Jo, he had gone to France. He met Amy in Paris. Amy cared about Laurie and crushed on him, and then they fall in love to each other.

Jo went back to home to take care of Beth , who was ill and would die soon.

After Beth died , Jo was very sad. However Professor Bhaer comforted her; they met each other when Jo lived in New York. At last, Jo married to Professor Bhaer although he was twenty years older than her.

In my opinion, I see a lot of love between Marches. After reading, I think families are the most beautiful things in the world.I learn one word. If "play" be noun, it means script. I also learn one proverb, " Five clothes make a man ". Meg and Amy wanted five clothes in the story. Five clothes means property, money and the rich life.

During the two weeks, I have read a book "Under the Greenwood Tree"or" The Mellstock Quire A Rural Painting of the Dutch School". The writer was Thomas Hardy born in 1840 and died in 1928.The book was published anonymously in 1872.Hardy was one of the most famous writers in England and was good at writing about love and the problems between men and women. Besides, the book level was elementary (600words).The reason I chose it was that I was enchanted with the beautiful cover.
The leading man was Dick Dewy, who lived in the village of Upper Mellstock and he sang in the choir with his father and grandfather. On the other hand, the leading woman was Fancy Day, who came to work in the village and was sweet and beautiful .Soon after, Dick fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. However, Fancy's beauty also fascinated other men , who tried to get the choir to make up to Fancy.Dick face lots of difficulties and finally made his dream come true!
After reading, I looked up to Dick's tireless spirit to pursue love. In the same time ,I really appreciated the author's description about meticulous love story. Perhaps, next time, I would choose the same author's book one more time.

I hasn't finish my book this time.I really read at a very slow speed.I didn't give many times for reading it.I still can't have this habit.Whether I want to read or not is seemed to be affected by my mood. When I feel tired or bad in mood I can't keep reading on and it is a hindrance that make me can't concentrate on not only reading but studying. Now I think it's time for me to face this trouble seriously. But I haven't found a way to improve it.
Another problem is that I mix some charactors together. When I saw a name I wondered who he is and what did he do.I think it's really hard for me to memorize them because it is still not familiar to me.I find it is more easier to remember when I speak out their name .The sound make me impressive.
This time I can smell the story's important idea. The people prepaired to revolution. They killed the spy once they knew someone is.They are not afraid of being captured or dead. This bad era should be changed.Prople shouldn't live in terror and they must do smething.

This time, I chose the book "A Christmas Carol" for me. It is written by

Charles Dickens in 1843, illustrated by Ian Miller and published by OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY. Its level is stage 3(1000 headwords), and there are 57 pages in the book.

The reason why I chose this book is that I read the guide of it and it had me want to know more about it. I have finished 25 pages.

The story is said that the leading character, Scrooge is a hard, clever but mean man.

The only thing that matters him is business, and making money. Everyone will not say hello or give a smile to him. When his nephew visited him on Christmas Eve, he was not happy but saw Christmas as humbug.

I think Scrooge is really a lonely man. I think he is so capitalist that he always feels money is important in his life. Therefore, he armed himself with coldness and forgets to pursue more meaningful and nice things in his life.

After two boys' concernment, the game became more interesting.
Unfortunately, Elizabeth's parakeet was killed by a cat.
Even though she felt brokenhearted, Egyptian still had a good idea.
They wanted to hold a sacred ceremony and to bury the parakeet.

I admire their ideas very much and I feel a little envy them.
Because the game seems interesting and special.
Most of all, I like the ancient Egypt due to it's mysterious custom.
After reading the book, I always imagine that I also participate this game.
And I really hope I can back to my childhood to play some games like that.

During these two weeks, I have finished reading an English book called "the Black Tulip" and a story of "Silver Blaze and Other Stories."
"the Black Tulip" is written by Alexandre Dumas, retold by Florence Bell. It is at beginner level with 63 pages. This book is published by Heinemann ELT.
This story began from a competition of growing a black tulip. Cornelius Van Baerle was clever and rich. He loved tulips more than other flowers. Because some untruth reason ,he was sent to prison. Isaac Boxtel was a mean guy. He tried to steal bulbs of black tulips from Cornelius Van Baerle. The novel which i chose to read after "never let me go" is "Disgrace"
The author of this book is J.M.Coetzee who won the Nobel prize for literature at 2003.
This novel was published by "Vintage" at 2000.It contains about six thousands words on 219 pages.
It seems to be a long story, but the central issue or in the other word the main theme of this book is really appetizing to me , that is "racial discrimination in south africa".
A professor who was teaching Romantic poetry at an University in Cape town south africa began the whole story.David lurie,as a professor, who has twice divorced, and horribly ,has a impulsive affair with his student, also know as "teacher-student relationship".
For a time, his daughter played a role who influence and harmonise his discordant life. But when the balance of power in the country was about to change and shift. He and his daughter decame victims of a savage and disturbing attack.

Is ant different between justice and revenge? Bruce's father and mother were killed by a beggar. Should he forgive him? Could he kill that person by himself if the judge set him free?

The character 3 is talked about the transition of Bruce. The murderer, Chill, was captured before long he committed the murder. Many years later, Chill served a sentence and would grant bail. That news was the last thing Bruce want to learn. He extremely hoped that the Chill was sentenced capital punishment. However, The judge set him free.

In my opinion, the law in Gotham is corruptible. A murderer such as chill should be executed absolutely. However, it is inevitable to have crime in Gotham, because the poor accounted for large percentage of citizen. Only a few people are rich. It is difficult to make decision who to blame. If all of people were affluent , who wants to kill person for money?

Within few days, Jacob and John didn't talk each other. John also talked little with Cassie, Sarah, and Caleb. Sarah said these man were too stubborn, and Caleb worried they would hurt each other. One day, John was sick seriously, Sarah asked Jacob to take him to see Sam, the doctor of this town. Sam told Jacob that John's body was very bad, and had lots of problems. He needed to be in the hospital, until rehabilitation. Jacob and Anna took care of John, so he became good gradually. In these days, they stated to understand each other. After John recovered, they finally became families.

In this story, I learned the way of dealing with problems. Instead of keeping our hate in mind, we should let past passed way. No matter what happened, families were still families.

And the next book I chosen is ''The Orange Outlaw ''. This book was written by Ron Roy, he is an amazing author of the A to Z mysteries series. His book let people enjoy reading. This story was about three kids' adventure of catching the painting thief. They only had some clues about orange peels and an orange hair. So how could the kids catch the crafty crook?

This weekend, I read the new story. The title of the novel is "Hamlet".The original author is Shakespeare, and the re-write author is Anne Collins.
The book was published by Pearson Education Limited in association with Penguin Books Ltd,both companies being subsidiaries of Pearson Plc.
The book first published in 2000 and there are fifty-three pages in this book.
It is a 1200 vocabulary level book,I help I can get more fun in this level book.I introduced the outline generally.
Hamlet is the leading man,and he is a prince. He discovered that his uncle murdered his father, but now his mother married his uncle.
A terrible things happened to him.should he kill his uncle?Could his mother afford her second husband's death? He can't decide what to do?
When he tried to decide,he brought death to many other people around him.
By the end of play,I felt very unfortunate for him.
Finally,Hamlet revenged himself on his father's murderer, his uncle, but he had been dead for denouement.
After reading this tragedy ,I agree with Hamlet avenged his father ,but I think the better way is that he didn't hurt his family members.
Maybe he can take moderate plan to carry out.Even then,I usually admire Shakespeare that he can write so absorbing story.
Now,I find I can more concentrate on reading than before, and I must maintain this good habit forever.

This two weeks I have read nearly half of my chosen book – Pride And Prejudice. There were too many different names in the book, making me confused. I had to write down those names in the space of book and analyse their relationship, so that I could read it more unhinderedly. And on the last page were a glossary which helped me a lot in reading. By using it, I haven't to consult the word I didn't know by dictionary and waste time.
The story began on the newcomers in the village of Longbourn. Mr. Bingley, one of the newcomers, was very handsome and rich, falling in love with Jane at the ball when they first met. Jane was one of the Bennet's daughters and she was good-natured and beautiful. On the other hand, Jane's sister, Elizabeth, decided to hate Mr. Darcy who was Mr. Bingley's friend at the same ball. Elizabeth disliked Mr. Darcy's pride and Mr. Darcy thought Elizabeth not as pretty as her sister. As time went on, Mr. Darcy was gradually appealed by Elizabeth's clever, though Elizabeth still believed him an arrogant guy.
One day, Jane received a letter from Mr. Bingley's sister, saying that both them and Mr. Darcy were going to stay in London and won't be back. This terrible news made Jane heartbroken. Elizabeth had noting to do but encouraged her sister that this bad plan must be thought by Mr. Darcy, not Mr. Bingley.

After teacher teaching us how to choose the book to read and how to write the reading journal, I decided to rechose the book.
These weeks, I found the book called "ARCTIC TALE". It's written by Barry Varela and published by National Geographic. The "ARCTIC TALE" was released movie and book together last year. The leading roles are Nanu and Seela. Nanu is a baby polar bear, and Seela is a newborn walrus.
It's a story talking about their living in arctic.
The reasons I chose this book is that I am interested in the animals in arctic! In this book, I learned that the male polar bear will leave the female and baby polar bear, and it's also will eat them. How strange it is! So that, baby polar bears live with their mother. The baby walrus not only live with mother and also their aunt they meet on the way to the other place. Polar bears don't afraid of other animals in arctic. They are the strongest. Moreover, both polar bear and walrus eat the seal. I didn't know these things before. It was amazing for me! The other reason is that this story is related about the global warming. Global warming is the issue everyone talking about now. With the temperature get higher and higher, the ice in arctic will melt away. The animals will have no place to live. I think this book may also present the environment in arctic now.
There are 118 pages (11 chapters) in this book. I have read 54 pages (4 chapters). However, "ARCTIC TALE" is easier to read than other books I chose before, and the content is interesting. I hope I can finish it as quick as I can.

Title: Anne of Green Gables

Author: L.M. Montgomery

The re-write author: Anne Collins

Publishing company: PENGUIN READERS

Year of publishing: 2002

Number of pages: 40

Vocabulary level: Level 2

Anne is an orphan. She was adopted by Marilla and Matthew. In the beginning, they wanted to adopt a boy, not a girl. But, they don't wanted Anne to go and live with a woman who wasn't very kind to her. So, they decided to live in the Green Gables together. Although Anne made some mistakes, she was still brave to face them and solve them. She was very kind to everyone. At first, she was very hate a boy, Gilbert, because he was rude about her hair. But, she finally forgave him and they became good friends.

I think that everyone should be very kind to other people. Just being like Anne. Because the people in the society always keep other people at a distance, the people will become much stranger over a long period of time. If we use love to deal with everyone, the society will fill with love. And, everybody will become happy. And, we have to brave to face our mistakes. Don't be afraid of facing them. Then, we are going to deal with the mistakes which we made. That's a right attitude to face mistakes, not only avoid them.

I still read the same book.

Chapter 15

Every animal heard the crickets started to sing "Summer is over and gone" in the grasses, and they had different feelings. Some are happy, and some are sad. Wilbur looked radiant because Charlotte wove "RADIANT" on her web. Wilbur asked her if she would go Fair with him. she said she might not go, because she need to lay eggs.

Chapter 16

Everyone and every animal were exciting to expect to go to the Fair. Before they went to the Fair, Mrs. Zuckerman felt Wilbur's ears were dirty, so she decided to take him a bath. Because Charlotte still worried about Wilbur, she promised to go in the end. And she requested Templeton to go together, since he knew more words how to spell.

Chapter 17

Then they were all happy to go the Fair. There were many people in the Fair, since it comes once a year. Next to the Wilbur's pigpen was a big pig called Uncle. He was more larger than Wilbur. After Charlotte talked with him, she felt uncomfortable. She didn't like him very much.

This week I choose the book "Saving private ryan" to read. It is adapted from the novel by Max Allan Collins and based on the screenplay by Robert Rodat. There are 101 pages(15 chapters) in this book.
Although I saw this movie before, I didn't know what the director want to tell us because I was only 8 at that time. So I decide to read this book to know this story again.
The story is talked about at WW2,Captain John Miller and his men received the mission from government that they had to look for Ryan and brought him home because all his brothers died in the war.
After reading this story I have some opinions. Is it worth to rescue Ryan at risk of all teams lives? I think it is not worth because they all have familys. If they die at the mission, their parents also are very sad. In addition,at the war,as citizen you must have determination of sacrifice for the country. So if Ryan die unfortunately we will be proud of him not sad for him.

I finished the latter half of "Charlotte's Web" these weeks. Under Charlotte's efforts, Wilbur not only lives, but also goes to the county fair with Charlotte. He wins the prize in the end. After the county fair, Charlotte lays eggs which are bigger than her body and then she dies. Wilbur brings it back to Zuckerman's farm. When spring comes, a lot of little spiders crawl out from the eggs. Most of them leave but three of them still remain to be friends with Wilbur.

If the little pig didn't met Charlotte, he would be very miserable. Besides, if Fern didn't help Wilbur, he would be a watering cuisine. Charlotte helps Wilbur to escape the death and Wilbur helps Charlotte to care for her children. The selfless help can change our life. We often argue with our friends. However, a pig and a spider can have such a deep relationship and why we can't. After finishing the book, I understand that friendship isn't relevant to the race or all the external form. I'll try hard to help my friends when they're in a trouble just like what Charlotte did. I'll try to open my heart to all kinds of friends just like what Wilbur did.

Recently,I choose a book which is called My Sister's Keeper.
Because I have read chinese version before,so it well be more easy for me to read english version .
Following is its synopsis.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and a role that she has never questioned… until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister ,and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable… a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves. My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life… even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less?

I think the author vividly evokes the physical and psychic toll, and it's a complex subject with bravado, everybody should not miss it!

Methods for Effective Learning

A. To grasp main ideas of a discourse

1. Read/watch/listen attentively. TAKE NOTES.

2. Use the 6W1H (or, the reporter) approach for re-organize:

a. Who did

b. what,

c. when, where,

d. why,

e. how and

f. to what effect (results and implications). or

3. Use pentad: (actually can be understood from the reporter approach)

a. Act: What happened? What is the action? What ideas are involved? To what results and implications?

b. Scene: Where is the act happening? What is the background situation? (including when)

c. Agent: Who is involved in the act? What are their roles?

d. Agency: How do the agents act? By what means do they act?

e. Purpose: Why do the agents act? What do they want?

B. What should you write in your reading journal (a kind of informal book report)?

1. Basic information about the book, if it is a new book for that particular journal entry.

Title, author, the re-write author, publishing company, year of publishing, number of pages, vocabulary level (if marked)

2. What you read during the period of the journal entry?

Number of pages you read and a summary of the story (or part of the story). Here, what you do is paraphrasing. In principle, you should use your own words. If you find someone else’s writing suits your needs (of explaining) very well, you can quote them. But you must give credit. Otherwise, you are committing plagiarism.

3. Your thoughts on what you read. Again, here, you should use your own words. If you feel a need to borrow someone’s writing, give credit.

4. Your thoughts on your reading effectiveness

As this exercise is to cultivate and to enhance your reading ability, a reflection on how you do it with what effectiveness will be helpful. Are you having fun? Being moved? Inspired? Frustrated? Bored? Are you choosing the right book? Are you using your time well? Are you doing this totally just by yourself or doing it with some friendly support will be better?
