Exercise in Paraphrasing

1. Definition of “paraphrasing” revisited. “para-“ “phrase-“

* You must get the most important ideas.
* Please don’t include your opinions or lessons learned in paraphrasing.

2. Be concrete and specific. Instead of saying “his old theory” and “new theory”, tell what the theories are. Key actors are also important. Write out the names. Don’t just say “he” or “his friend”.

3. Accurate description of time sequence and causal relationship are also crucial for a faithful paraphrasing.

4. Pretty good examples:

A

1. At first, Samenow thought criminals were victims of early traumatic experience or family instability, but after studying, he realized that criminal choose to commit crimes, not by his environment. He accepted the study and published “Inside the Criminal Mind.” He dared to change his mind.

2. Stanton Samnow is a clinical psychologist working with criminals. He believed that criminals were victims of early traumatic experiences. His treatment based on it didn’t work. Then he joined Yochelson’s work and found he was wrong. He discovered the problem of crime is the way they think.

B.

1. Samnow thought criminals were affected by environment, but finally realized criminals choose to commit crimes. He dared to change his mind.

2. Stanton Samenow first thinks the crime is caused by criminal’s environment, but later when find the true reason is criminal’s thinking, not the environment, he dared to change his mind.

This week I choose the book "Forrest Gump" to read. Before I read this book, I only heard about the title.I did't know what this book talk about. After I finish it, I find it changes my mind toward this world a lot and also encouages me never give up.In the story, though,Forrest is low in intelligene,he is good at running even elected in soccer star team.It tells us if god closes one window he will open the other window for you.Everyone all has a potential ability just look at you can find it or not.I also think Forrest is very optimistic about his life.He never envies other people's have, in the contrary, he only looks at what he has.
"Life is like a box of chocolates,Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get."
is my favorite sentence in the story. I think it is just life.

The book I chose is "The Kite Runner". The author is Khaled Hosseini who is an immigrant from Afghanistan and lives in America now.
This book is started with an intimate friendship between two boys- Amir and Hassan. They grew up, lived and played together, though their relationship was master and servant. It seems that the peaceful life will last forever until the misery happened when Amir was 12 years old. Unfortunately, at the critical moment of the misery Amir chose to betray his friend. After that, the two good friends were apart from each other forever.
Until now, there is a sentence-"For you, a thousand times over." in the book impressed me most. It was expressed by Hassan to show his loyalty and dedication without any repayment. The loyalty of Hassan contrast sharply with the cowardice of Amir. Nevertheless, maybe facing the misery is too hard for a child. After all, lack courage to face the reality is always a weakness of human nature.
Another importance factor constructs this book is "inequity". As a non-Afghan, I can understand hardly why the status of some races is still lower than others in 21th century. I do not think this kind of things would happen in this modern society. Apparently my thinking is innocent. After reading almost the half of this book, I am looking forward to read the rest of it.

This two weeks I finally finished my chosen book – Charlotte's Web. The ending was just like what I predicted, but even more loving and happier.
Thanks to friends' help, the pig, Wilbur, eventually won the medal in the fair, which could protect him from being killed as ham or bacon. The honor of triumph brought joy to everyone there. The moment Wilbur enjoyed in the glory, the spider, Charlotte, told him a bad news that she was going to die. What a sudden strike to Wilbur. By reading here, I was sad to cry. Wilbur was going to lose his best friend, such a kind friend. Though I'm afraid of spiders, I do like Charlotte. Charlotte was too weak to travel home with everybody. The only thing Wilbur could do was that bring Charlotte's egg sac home, taking care of them.
Wilbur leaded a wonderful time in winter when he should have been killed. Now, spring was coming and dozens of baby spiders crawled from the sac. They were excited to see their mother's best friend. But most of them didn't want to live in the pigpen. They traveled to another place by using their silk to form a balloon and flew by wind. I doubt weather spiders can really use silk to form balloons. If it is real, it's magical. There were three spiders left to company with Wilbur. They were good friends, too. But in Wilbur's heart, no other spider can take Charlotte's place.
There were too many appealing things in our life, such as computer and television. Sometimes, we forgot there also has something interesting around us. Something was simple, not too complicated and worth noticing.

This week I select a article from National Geographic to write my reading journal.I think last book I select to read is too diffcult for me to read,
I can't really understand the mean of the book and read efficiently. So,I revise my plan to find the article from same magazines or newspapers to write
my reading journals. The topic of the article I select this week is "Alexander The Great's "Crown" Shield Discovered?"writen by Sara Goudarzi.
An ancient tomb thought to held the body of Alexander The Great's father philip II is actually that of Alexander's half brotheer. In 1977, the
archaeologists found out the three ancient royal Macedonian burials, the Tomb I is a sigle stone box containg human identified as mature male,a younger
female, and a newborn. The Tomb II is a large vaulted tomb with two chambers, contained a young woman and a mature male and remain some treasures including
some vessels, potterys,an iron helmet, and a ceremonial shieldand an object initially identified as a scepter.
Later, the archaeologists announced that the burial in the main chamber of the large rich tomb was that of Philip II,father of Alexander the Great, who
was assassinated in 336 B.C.But,their theory had been breaken today.some scientist found the new evidences to proof these treasures remain in the Tomb
II don't produce in Philip II's era,and the mature male laying in the chamber is Alexander's half brother, who had been Alexander The Great's successor.

Unfortunately , Oliver fails. The reason is not concern about his nature but his miserable destiny , he is being found by these thieves , taken back to their beachhead , and "well treated" . Just at the moment , Nancy , a lover of Bill sike , defends Oliver , tries to protect him from the "heaven" where he is , and finally from his friend . I am wondering that why author make Nancy become Oliver's protector though she couldn't help much , through chapters before , author has a clear distinction between these who are good and bad , but now Nancy's behavior blurs that boundary . Could we say , in fact , author still believes that the humanity is good , even "now" they're bad . I see the hope from Nancy , I wish she 's not the only one in the time that we think the world is brutal and dark , I really hope so .

I have finished the book ,called "The Chronicles of Narnia-the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe".

The main idea of the book is that some kids Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie from our world go into a magical world " Narnia"through the Wardrobe .And there is a evil white witch who has enchanted Nania for a long time so that it is always winter and never Christmas . The kids help the inhabitants of Narnia fight the forces of white witch.

I love one of the main characters ,called Aslan . He is not only a lion but also the king and god of Narnia. The reason why I love him is that he sacrifices his life to help another. Aslan represents Christ.

"The Chronicles of Narnia-the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"is not difficult to read. I enjoy entering this magic world with these kids because I can see many interesting things ,and can experience a exciting adventure.

In this two month, I finished the book " Charlotte's Web ". The literary in the book is plain, so I can image the frame clearly by its vivid description. Now I will continue to represent the summary of the story.

Wilbur is vigorous and always exploring new things. He lives with Fern, the girl who has saved him, for a few weeks and then is sold to her uncle, Homer Zuckerman. Though Fern visits him at the Zuckermans' farm as often as she can, Wilbur feels lonelier day after day. Finally, a warm and soothing voice tells him that she is going to be his friend. The next day, he wakes up and meets his new friend: Charlotte, the gray spider. Wilbur soon becomes a member of the community of animals who live in the cellar of Zuckerman's barn.

When the old sheep in the barn cellar tells Wilbur that he is going to be killed and eaten at Christmas, he asks Charlotte for help. Charlotte has the idea of writing words in her web praising Wilbur's excellence (such as 'SOME PIG'), reasoning that if she can make Wilbur sufficiently famous, he will not be killed. Thanks to Charlotte's efforts, Wilbur not only lives, but goes to the county fair--with Charlotte--and wins a prize.

Because of the short lifespan of spiders, Charlotte dies at the fair. Wilbur repays Charlotte by bringing home with him the sacred of eggs she had laid at the fair before dying. When Charlotte's eggs hatch at Zuckerman's farm and most of Charlotte's daughters leave to make their own lives elsewhere, three (Nellie, Aranea and Joy) remain there as friends to Wilbur.

The story reminds me of the movie "Babe", which acts by animals. Both of them feature by little pig. And I am delighted with those two pigs have a happy ending!

The goods come from China with low price because of its' low cost of labor .if I din't buy these goods means that I should buy something from the other country.Maybe the quality will be good, but your money will loss. And why we boycott the China's goods? I don't think boycott is a right behavior. You can choose what you like but don't easily boycott somethibg. There are many people live in China need the wages to support their own family. Maybe the quality of goods is bad,but they have a low price . Good quality or low price is your own decision!

But now I can read it fluently.I think I get used to it and I conquered my fear.
The story is covered with a dark color. It described a scene that every one who wanna climbed up Shooter's hill defended to everyone else .It's a simple description, but it pointed out it's a time that the society is not stable.People lived under terror and they don't trust others. Then someone came and brang a letter to one of them called Jerry. This is the content of chapter one .I don't konw what's going on ,but when I kept reading I knew that it's a part of the story happened afterwards. the following action is an old man ,Mr.Lorry ,met a lady, Lucie Manette. He told her that her father was still alive and he wanted her to see him. They went to a wine shop .Her father was in a secret room of the wine shop with its door locked .Her father was making shoes when they got in.He kept making without any emotion on his face until Lucie Manette called him.He teared down on his face.
It's a charming book. Now I still can't get well-known of the roles' relationship. But I expect to.I wanna konw what had happened and will happen. It likes that there has a magic to push me to reading on.

During this two week I just read one English book called "A Christmas Carol."
It is written by Charles Dickens, retold by F. H. Cornish. And this book is at elementary level .There are about 1,100 basic words in it. The main story is about a mean old man called Scrooge, who at last became a kind person.
Scrooge worked with Marley in the same office as a businessman. Marley died several years ago. Scrooge didn't think about anybody, even his partner. He hated Christmas and said Christmas was humbug. What he care was his money. Not until Marley's ghost appeared did he turn over a new leaf. To save Scrooge from traveling endlessly through the world after his death, he asked three ghosts to meet Scrooge that night.

The first ghost was Christmas Past. It showed Scrooge his past. Scrooge wasn't so mean when he was young, he had warm Christmas with his friends. The unhealthy interest in money made him change gradually. After Scrooge in the present saw this, he cried.

The second ghost was Christmas Present. It was very kind. It showed Scrooge the poor but cheerful Christmas and his nephew's Christmas. The poor were very happy and they drank to Scrooge's health, though Scrooge wasn't so kind to them. Scrooge was moved.

The last of the ghosts was Christmas Yet. It was mysterious. It showed Scrooge's death. Nobody cared about it. In another family a little boy died. The family members cried, and they would remember him forever.

After the night, Scrooge became kind to others. A mean and stingy person finally turned into a generous and kind man.
In this story, Scrooge only paid attention to his money. He didn't care about others, even his nephew. No matter Marley's ghost and the three ghosts is true or just a dream, Scrooge indeed learned a lesson from it. And I hope I will also keep the story in mind. I am not sure whether when I earn lots of money one day will I turn into a person like stingy Scrooge. But I wish I will never forget this: "Money can't buy you everything, especially happiness."

My Reading Journal 4 H組,Pythia

In the past two weeks, I had kept reading and had already finished it at 4/10.To sum up,I had some personal ideas after reading it.
In fact,in the beginning, Elizabeth and Darcy had prejudice against each other. However they reconciled their feelings for each other at last. The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth resulted in ineresting and inconceiviable ending as they got to know one another.
Naturally,we offen get picky, critical or arrogant fellinf on other and think little of others. It is precisely the high time for " Pride and Prejudice " to present themselves. So is for the conflict to come about. This dark side of human characters is intensively exaggerated and painted in this book in a very careful manner, to which is worthy to pay every attention of yours closely.
Sometimes we have first negative or positive impression that is stubbornly rooted and it is human characters. In my view, the real weakness of human character is how harsh one may treat others, but to himself totally contrarily. IN this book, because of Elizabeth's ordinary birth, Dasi failed to speak out his feelings to Elizabeth by giving way to his pride. He felt terribly embarrassed by falling in love with a girl of inferior family. His dignity get heavily burdened accordingly.
The orthodox criteria of one's birth make both of them turn a blind eye to their love in-between. Wisest as man is, one often gets stuck with some certain paranoiac rules for the sake of ridiculous principles. Doesn't he realize that as a man, only showing his true color is the only way to justify what he is.
In spite of numerous difficulty and misunderstanding, love is as usual so unstoppable and tops over every hindrance. Among all of the conflicting events in succession, these two aspects of human character, pride and prejudice, evidently reveal themselves. We people always consider us greater than any creature. As it is, we are no better, and this is illustrated best by the leading roles of this book.

I finished the "WHITE FANG" this week, I read from pages 28 to pages 39.

White Fang sold by his master, Gray Beaver. Beauty Smith bought him.

However beauty Smith called White Fang "The Killer Wolf" and showed

him to people for money. When White Fang slept, people woke him with stick,

they wanted to see an angry wolf. White Fang was very angry;

he hated beauty Smith very much. One day, White Fang was hurt by other dogs,

and then beauty Smith sold White Fang to Matt.

Matt took White Fang to his home. In this way, White Fang's old life ended,

and his new life began. Slowly, he learned new lessons and forgot old ones.

White Fang liked Matt very much. White Fang has changed from a vicious

wolf to a faithful dog.

In my opinion, Matt helped White Fang learn what is life and love.

In this two weeks, I read"Charlotte's Web" almost half. This book begins when John Arable's sow gives birth to a litter of piglets, and he discovers one of them is a runt and decides to kill it. However, his 9 year old daughter Fern begs him to let it live. Therefore her father gives it to Fern as a pet, and she names the runt Wilbur.

Wilbur lives with Fern for a few weeks and then is sold to her uncle, Homer Zuckerman. Although Fern visits him at the Zuckermans' farm as often as she can, Wilbur gets lonelier day after day. Eventually, a warm and soothing voice tells him that she is going to be his friend. The next day, he wakes up and meets his new friend: Charlotte, the gray spider.

I can never imagine that a pig will give all its true heart to a spider which looks terrible and dangerous. Likewise, the spider returns a true-hearted promise to the pig which may not have future at all . Though they're different from each other, it won't be the gap between their friendship. Their friendship cross all the boundaries, and is built by two hearts' harmony. Now, I have many thoughts about my friends. I never think much about the meaning of friendship, but now, I have new idea. I'll try to treat my friends with my true heart more than before.

Due to the mid-term exam, I didn't read any new chapter in this week. Therefore, I will analyze the difference between "The Tales From Shakespeare" and "The Phantom Of The Opera."

Even both of two books are talking about the most famous opera in the world, but I think the two books are totally different. The reason is the level. "The Tales From Shakespeare" is written by Charles and Mary Lamb. The reason why they wrote this book is that they intended to as an introduction about Shakespeare for readers who were too young to read the plays. The words in the book are not so hard. However, "The Phantom Of The Opera" is written by Gaston LEROUX , the origin author. The letters in the book are really difficult. Actually, I didn't "read" this book. I "scanned" and "skimmed" this book because many words I didn't know. If I spent time looking for the words, I think it will take five minutes or even more to understand the words and what the sentence actually mean. Besides, I will not use the words I look for and I had watched the movie before so that I just skim it and scan it.

It is quite different between the movie and the book. In the movie, the tempo is really fast, just about twenty minutes or a little more but the movie already present three chapters. The movie also ignore many details such as "why there is a ghost", "the history about the theater" etc. due to the time district. Nevertheless, this is also the reason why somebody likes to watch the movie due to they can know the story in a short period or someone loves to read the book because there are more details in it.

Finally, he asked both mother and father to leave. They agreed. However, when they walked in sidewalk, a man with a gun rushed to them. "Wallet, jewelry , hurry!" In last reading journal I had introduced the book "The Secret Garden ", including it's simple story content and something about the author. In this period, I finished reading "The Secret Garden", and I found another book named "New Yorkers" as my next book. So this time I would like to tell you some sentiments which I got when I was reading the story. And if I discover something interesting in "New Yorkers", I will share with you next time.

I think "The Secret Garden " is a story which sees children as it's bulk, so the story is proceeding around the children and using points of the children's view to watch this world. Mary Lennox, a little girl, is the leading character of this story. Mary is born in a middle-class family, so she doesn't need to worry about her livelihood. But her parents are always busy with their own things and don't care about Mary. Her father is an official who is engaged in his work; her mother is a pretty woman who spent all her time going to parties. They can afford employing servants, so Mary is often accompanied only with servants who paid to look after her. I think that is a reason which results in some bad personalities of Mary, like that Mary is bad-tempered, disagreeable, and selfish. The children truly need others' company, especially the company of parents, and not only in material but also in spirit. I consider it is important that parents take time to be with kids and do some things, such as tell stories to them, play ball or go to a picnic with them, anything is fine. The important thing is parents and children are together, not what they do. In those time which parents and children spent together, they can exchange their thoughts about things, discuss or even argue with others, or they can just enjoy the company with family without many words. In that chance parents also can tell children what is good and what is bad, in order to make children have right values. And children can share their discoveries in daily life to make parent know what they underwent. The company and communication will get the relationship between parents and children be more closer. So I consider parents can not take they are busy as an excuse, and then not take time to be with children. Relatively, children also should not think talking with parents is wasting time. Family is everyone's strongest support. We should cherish every minute which we get along with our family.

The above is a part of my thought after reading "The Secret Garden". I still have some other thoughts left if having chance I will share about you. Now I have finished reading two books. Although I didn't spend much in reading and the books I chose are only thin and easy to read, I still feel happy and a little sense of achievement, and I indeed gain something when I am reading and sometimes when I am thinking.

In the course of the past two weeks, I had kept reading, and found the story getting more and more unimaginable. Continued from the preceding plot, after James crawls inside, meeting lots of oversized friends , he gradually becomes one of the crew a magical crew! Then miraculous things happened to him or say, to all the creatures in the peach. Through one night, everything exciting will be on the horizon.

The next morning, James wakes up by clamor and an earthquake! He tries to get it clear it turn out to be that the creatures want to depart forever from the top of the tree on the hill. Then, they do!! With a snip of the stem, the peach starts rolling away, and their unusual adventure unroll. However, as read previously, this is a "giant"peach where it rolls through either flattening or knocking anything on the street with its hurtling. At the end of the street is an enormous building and out the other side, leaving two gaping round holes. This is a chocolate factory, and almost at once a greet river of warm melted chocolate comes pouring out of the holes. That made James and his friends happy.

The peach unceasingly keeps rolling until it reached the ocean, approaching the cliff, suspending for a few seconds, then it begins to fall down…… It fall into the ocean and there is terrible thing waiting for them lots of sharks, eating the peach! The creatures are afraid that they keep eating, causing them homeless. James, at this time, gets an idea Miss Spider and Silkworm spin silk and tighten it to the seagulls, made Earthworm as bait.

Since I started to read this book, I have thought there are all fertile imaginations, and the plot always beyond my expectations. This few weeks I read it 2030 minutes a day. Although I am busy for the coming midterm examination recently, I use trifling time to read it as possible as I can. And I hope I can really make good use of time!!

Because this two week is midterm, I didn't read many part of the novel. But although I read a little page, I still found some meaning from this novel. The little girl of this story, Pecola, has already moved to live with MacTeer family, and keep well with Claudia and Frieda. There was a scene that makes me have an emotion. It was when Frieda's mother found that three quarts of milk in the icebox has disappeared. And she knew that Claudia and Frieda hated milk, so the only one would drink the milk is Pecola. But what make me surprise wasn't Pecola drank three quarts of milk, but the reason why she want to drink so much milk. The reason is that Pecola hope drinking milk can make her skin white, so she drank so much milk. When I read this paragraph, I felt sad with Pecola. She was a pure little black girl just wanted to become a white girl. There was a big contrast between these two families. I learned many things from this novel.

In the two weeks recently,I chose a shorter story to read.Because of the mid-term will come in this week,my read time was less than before.

The story which I chose to read was called "The Love-Philtre of Ikey Schoenstein". I introduce the content of story briefly. There were four major leading roles who were Ikey,Rosy,Mr. McGowan, and Mr. Riddle.Ikey was a medicine teacher in the Blue Light Drug Store, and McGowan was his good friend. But they loved the same girl,Rosy. However,Rosy also liked McGowan. So Ikey was very envy he.A day,McGowan told Ikey that he would elope with Rosy.He hoped the plan can progress smoothly,he need Ikey give a Hallucinogen. And then Ikey gave McGowan it,but he told Rosy's father Mr. Riddle the thing. When the day came,Ikey very suspected the result. But next day McGowan told Ikey that he was success. Originally, the Hallucinogen was drunk by Mr. Riddle incautiously. So Ikey's trick didn't carry out.

So we shouldn't play scheming and frame up others.Otherwise, facts usually with ideal dissimilarity.

Christopher knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057 . He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions . He cannot stand to be touched . And he detests the color yellow .
Although gifted with a superbly logical brain , fifteen-year-old Christopher is autistic and everyday interactions and admonishment have little meaning for him . He lives on patterns , rules , and a diagram kept in his pocket .
Then one day , a neighbor's dog , Wellington , is killed and his carefully constructed universe is threatened . Christopher sets out to solve the murder in the style of his favorite logical detective , Sherlock Holmes .
Its follows really makes me feel funny and fascinating . Its portrayal of a person whose curse and blessing are a mind is fascinating .
I'll finish the good book these days .

I have finished "Matilda" last week. It was really great that Matilda used her intelligence and super power to help the children in the school from being controlled by the terrible headmistress. She also helped the lovely and friendly teacher, Miss Honey, get back her house. In the end, Matilda left her parents who never really cared about her. Instead, she then lived with Miss Honey. I'm sure that she will have a bright future after this change.
Last Thursday I picked up another book. It's "A Year Down Yonder," written by Richard Peck and published by Puffin Books. Actually, after reading for a while, I found out that it was a sequel to the author's another book "A Long Way from Chicago." Despite so, I think it would be as brilliant as the former one. After all, if the former one was named a Newbery Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book, and an ALA Best Book for young adults, how bad its sequel could be?
I am eager to see what is going to happen when the young city girl is sent to live with her grandmother in the country. I believe it will be very interesting.

The book I read latest is "Falling Leaves". It was written by Adeline Yen Mah and published by Penguin Readers at level intermediate (1700 words).
This book is the life story of Adeline Yen Mah, who was born in China at a time of great change trouble (early 20century).
Adeline's grandaunt showed her independence by refusing to have her feet bound when she was only three years old. When she reached school age, the family was richer, she was sent to a fashionable and expensive American school, the first child in the Yen family who was taught by foreigners. Several years later, Adeline's grandaunt opened her own bank, all the employees were women, and she didn't marry.
Adeline's grandparents entered an arranged marriage when they're very young. After getting marry, Grandfather supported his family by hiring out boats on the Huangpu River. He was careful with money and by the age of 40, he was quite a rich man.
Adeline's father did well at school, especially in English. At the age of 18, he chose not to go to university and was employed as an office boy in his father's company. When he was 19 years old, he started his own business. The company made money from everything it did. He began to be know in the business world as the "magic boy" who had the power of "changing iron into gold."
Four children were born in four years after Adeline's parents got marry. But her mother died after giving birth to her, and her family thought that she had brought bad luck. Her father's remarriage changed the life of the Yen family, especially after her grandmother's funeral.
In the period of World War 2, because Japanese's invasion, they had to leave Tianjin for Shanghai. Since then, Adeline suffered terribly over the years, emotionally and physically, from her father and stepmother's treatment of her. Her brothers and sister and she received no pocket money and had no clothes except their school uniforms. They also had to walk to and from school daily only if they showed their obedience to their stepmother. All members of the whole family had to listen to stepmother, inclusive of their grandfather and aunt. Adeline's disobeying worsened her relationship with stepmother very much. Life was very different for their half brother and sister. A private teacher looked after them. They had lots of lovely new clothes and toys. They ate meals separately in their room, and ordered whatever they wanted.
Adeline's big sister, Lydia, was forced to marry a man she never met when she was 17. Her stepmother kept the best wedding presents.
After Japanese lost the World War 2 and left China, a war began within the country, between the Kuomintang and the Communists. The Communists was against business people and people with property. The economic situation for people like the Yen was looking very bad. Adeline's father and stepmother decided to move to Hong Kong with her half brother and sister. Her grandfather would like to follow them but her aunt decided to stay in Shanghai. She didn't want to live with stepmother's daily criticism. Adeline's three teenage brothers were left in their Shanghai school, and then sent to university in England. About Adeline, she would be taken away from her family and sent to school in Tianjin and not allowed to send or receive any letters.
I haven't finish this book yet.

I finished the book "EMMA". It is written by Jane Austen.
The story of EMMA is talking about the young woman, Emma's life and her love. Emma is beautiful and rich, but her mother died when she was very young. She lived with her father Mr. Woodhouse and sister Isabella. They lived in Highbury where is near London. After her sister got married and lived with her husband in London. Only Emma and her father lived together. Mr.Woodhouse hoped that Emma not to get marry. If she get marry, he will be very lonely.
Emma didn't want get marry, either. She has never thought of getting married herself. Instead, she amused herself by trying to arrange marriages between her friends and neighbors. But Emma made a lot of mistakes and cause more problems than happy marriages. For example, she tried to match her friend Harriet and Mr. Elton. She thought that they like each other secretly in their own mind. But in fact, whom Mr. Elton loved is Emma, not Harriet. When Mr.Elton told Emma that he loved her, Emma felt very unhappy and sad. She didn't like Mr. Elton, and she was sure that Harriet will be heartbroken. Finally, she refused Mr.Elton and talked the true to Harriet. Emma was so busy trying to arrange other people's lives. Then she almost lost her own chance of love.
Day by day, Emma met more and more people in her life. She began trying to find her true love. Frank was her first love. He was very kind and humorous. Emma always hoped she can walking with him and talking with him all the time. But she found that Frank didn't loved her, he loved Jane the person that Emma didn't like a little bit. When she felt very sad, she also found that Mr. Knightley loved her. Emma was surprised that Mr. Knightley liked her. She thought he was her friend. However, she finally knew that Mr. Knightley was her Mr. Right. In the end of the story, they got married and lived with Emma's father in Highbury.
This story is talking about love. I think it's main idea is that we don't need to arrange our or other's love so prepensely. Sometimes, maybe you will find your Mr.or Miss Right is just behind you.

I have read 76 tales already. I think I can finish this book before April ends.

By the way, Liz found her word, ANTEVASIN. It means "one who lives at the border."

She go to Indonesia after her trip in India, she has no friends (even friends' friends) in Indonesia. She went there two years ago and visited a famous healer, Ketut Liyer.

He told her can go back to see him, and she is back now. She helps him read letters and English. Vice versa, he teaches her Balinese meditation.

I think it is very happy to both of them, that kind of happiness cannot describe in any languages.

I have an e-pal in France, he is a book author, and we met each other five tears ago.

We still stay in touch. That's amazing. He intends to come to Taiwan this summer.

So far, I spent little time to read, more time to think and to type for journals.

I get more than I predict. Reading book in its own language is really different and interesting.

This Monday I had a oral test in my class "novels in English", presentation really help me to think more to present more and get more. Group presentation does the same. That's really helpful. We will do our best to present better next time.

My forth novel is "A Christmas Carol", written by Charles Dickens.

It is about an old, rich but stinge man's story. His name is Scrooge.

Before Christmas, he was never concerned about anyone around him, he never felt happy.

However, a ghost, called Marley, helped him find his real heart.

There were three ghosts, including Marley, showed his past, now and future.

He knew that how kind was he, and how stinge now. Furthemore, how poor will he possible be.

After this journey, he began a new new new life, he stared to help others, gave anyone a big smile and always felt happy.

I think I should try hard to help anyone I can help.

Don't be stinge to anyone.

Helping others not only can make them happy also can make ourselves happier.

By this reading journey, I read many novels, and all of these are very classic.

I had never read Charles Dickens' novels.

But this semester I read two. I think behind his every story is an apologue.

I hope this summer vacation I can read more, no matter in English or Chinese.

The third book I choose is "Jane Eyre". The author`s name was given as "Currer Bell", and it was only later known to have been written by Miss Charlotte Bronte, one of the five daughters of a clergyman I Yorkshire.

Charlotte Bronte had an intense and lively imagination, and in
Jane Eyre she has projected much of her own character and experience. Like Jane she was little and plain, and like Jane she went to a charity school and later became a private governess.

Her sisters Emily an Anne shared Charlotte`s imaginative powers and writing ability, and many were the stories and dramas they invented in their childhood days. These developed later into various prose and poetical publication, of which
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte has been one of the most widely read since it was published more than a hundred years ago.

I would like to enjoy a romance that is full of character and interest.

Book title : The Call of the Wild

Author : Jack London

Retold by : Tania Iveson

Publishing house : Penguin Readers

Because I have middle exam this week, so I don't spend much time reading English book. I borrowed the book from the library. And this book has been adapted to movie many times.

Buck was a strong dog. Buck leads a comfortable life as the pet of Judge Miller in sunny California. Judge Miller's gardener's assistant, Manuel, abducts the dog and sells him to a trainer of sledge dogs, which were in great demand due to the discovery of gold in the frozen lands of the Yukon. Slowly introduced to the brutality of his new life, Buck is forced to survive and adapt to conditions in Alaska and the Yukon. He works pulling sledges with other dogs, learns to steal food, and engages in power struggle with other dogs for the lead position in the sledge team. He becomes the leader of the sled team. He changes hands many times before he is eventually acquired by a kind and loving owner, John Thornton. When Thornton is killed by Indians, Buck goes into a savage anger and kills several members of the native tribe. Buck returns to the wild and becomes the leader of a wolf pack he met a few days after the death of Thornton. He answered the call of the wild.

The life of Jack London was as interesting as his books. His family didn't have any money, and he wasn't happy with life in Pennsylvania. His great life, when he was a child, was reading. Jack London left school when he was fifteen years old and he visited other places in the United States. He had many different jobs, but he never had much money. In 1896, he heard about the gold in northwest Canada. He went there because he wanted a new life, and he wanted to find gold. He met many interesting people and animals. He left the Yukon three years later without any gold, but with the idea for a good story. This was "the call of the wild." Two of his other books about the cold north are White Fang and The Son of the Wolf. London was very famous, and he made a lot of money from his books. But he always had money problems, and he drank. He died at the age of forty.

The second book I chose is called "The Thorn Birds". It was written by an Australian author, Colleen McCullough.
This book began with a legend. In Australia, there is a kind of birds. From the time it is born, it searches for a thorn tree. And when it finds one, it flies at the highest, sharpest thorn. As it dies, it sings its last song – more beautiful than any other birds' . The thorn bird is the symbol of the heroine, Maggie Cleary. She is also searching for a way to sing her song.
This story happened in a private barony. The rich woman, Maggie's aunt, who had a great passion on Father Ralph. Although she gave her dower to help him promoting in the church, Father Ralph still didn't love her. It was because he had already deeply been in love with Maggie. And when Maggie grew up, she also realized the Father Ralph's love…
I haven't finished this book yet. But I found it was harder than my first book. Because there were many vocabularies and in some part I had to recite it once and once until I could understand!

Finally,I had finished the book---The Phantom Of The Opera.Because it is retold,it is not difficult to read.Forthermore,it has only about 50 pages,I am a little disappointed to myself that I read it over 1 month! The content in the book is still good, the rewritter catches the point, short, but good to look.I think the most happiest thing is that at last I finished this book, which I couldn't surpass in high school.

The next book I am going to read is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The reason that why I choose this book is simple:just because My brother have this book;and I have never seen this movie at all.It has bout 160 pages, not heavy, and seems good to read. The author is Roald Dahl.

Here are some introduces about this book:Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only 5 lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are:Augustus Gloop、Veruca Salt、Violet Beauregarde、Mike Teavee and Carlie Bucket, the hero,a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

I had started to read the novel "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time".I find there are some interesting factors in this story. It's writed by first-person narrative of Christopher ,just like he tells you his story in person. In the story,

Christopher explains why gives the chapters prime numbers,he say that prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you chould never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about that.Actually,he likes thinking, but he cann't really understand others thinkings, he cann't understand abstract things. So,he likes science and maths, because they just need to think by oneself.I think he is a genius,a dreamer,a murder mystery novel writer.

Children and adults are differ in their views of others,Rosaura think she and Luciana are friends, they know each other's secrets;do homework together, but in her mother's eyes, they are from different world. They conflicted.
At the end of the story.Rosaura has lost some of her innocence or naive. She finally realize why her mother said they are not friends because of the differ of their social classes.Like her mother, probably she will become more skeptical, amd less likely to believe people.
Experiences always change our attitude toward others.Sometimes they cause people to be more cynical and question the sincerity of those around us.We were thaught to bass our views on money and social classes, and learn that's how this world works, and then,we grow up.

Last Wednesday, I finished my first book, Matilda. Although this book was not difficult for me to read, it still took me the whole month to finish it. Because this book is really full of pages!
In the last part of this book, the little girl, Matilda, found that she had a special power. And she found this because once she was angry at her father. She suddenly realized that she could control things surround her with her mind! While trying to put up with her parents' and principal's cruelty, she decided to give them a lesson. She used this power to destroy the television and make a reptile fly on her principal. And with enough practice, Matilda started to learn to control her special power well. Finally, by using her power, she successfully drove the principal away from school.
However, this story ends with a happy ending. Because Matilda's father was captured by policemen, he had to move away to another city. But Matilda did not want to go with him. So, he finally decided to let Matilda live with her teacher, Miss Honey.
In my opinion, I think Miss Honey is the only person who can bring happiness to Matilda. So, I think it is really a better decision for her.
